I made the mistake of letting my son play MTW2 at the weekend. Initially, just so I could try out the Hotseat mod for the campaign game, but then he asked if he could try the single player campaign. Big mistake....
Now I'm sitting here twiddling my thumbs waiting for a second copy of the game to be delivered by play.com. Not only that but he is pawning the French and making my previous effort look pitiful. He just defeated a full stack of Milanese with a an army of under 500 English yeoman.
bl mate - console yourself with teh fact that
you set up the campaign so that he could do so well. Or something

Haha! My seven year old nephew loves Rome Total War. But the strange thing is that he doesn't like fighting the battles. He always autoresolves them. He keeps asking to be taken to Rome now to

He hasn't played Med 2 yet but he always watches me play it and loves to give me "tactical" advice during the battle

Hugely annoying frankly

Ohh noes I am a seven year old.
I'd be proud of the kid. He'll gow up trying to take over the world, which is all that I could ever hope for as a father.
Glad to hear there are a few others with a child who takes over the games.
My two sons (at the time four and six) had endless laughs setting up custom battles in M:TW (the first). Specifically, they enjoyed giving themselves ten trebuchets and five units of feudal knights, giving the enemy twenty units of peasants, and seeing how long the battle lasted.
Now that they're older, they have endless laughs setting up custom battles in M2:TW. Specifically, they enjoy giving themselves ten trebuchets and five units of feudal knights, giving the enemy twenty units of peasants, and then zooming in on the enemy units to watch the carnage in lovely detail.
When I try to take over from them, they plead, "Just one more peasant pummeling!" Some things don't change. Much.

My nine-year-old can whip my behind at anything but MTW. Know you know the secret of why I like it so much.

Well, you won't be saying thanks for girls after they bring home their first boyfriend!

I have a 12 year old daughter who gives me advise during combat - some of her suggestions are insane but to my surprise some of them work!!!!! She shows no interest in the strategic plan but when it comes to combat she is all over it. I have to admit that it is a little annoying getting suggestions from a back seat driver but on atleast 3 different occasions she has saved my army after examining what I was doing "wrong" and replaying the battle with her at the controls - LOL - kinda of scary when you think about it!!!!

Maybe it won’t be so bad. Maybe they will bring home a guy wearing full plate armor that constantly talks about his countless enemies that are cowards and wine sodden in equal measures and how they need to be crushed beneath his horse’s hooves.
I think every father hopes for that.

My 11 year old likes this game, and thankfully we have two computers linked together so, in our spare time, we enjoy many games against each other.
My son particularly whoops my behind in Battlefield 2 on a regular basis.

Better check that his Chivalry rating is good enough for her though

My 3-ear old constantly asks his mum permission to go and see watch Daddy play with "knights"...
If Mummy agrees, he sits on my knees and asks then it's "Daddy, Why this ? why that ?"...
He particularly loves the horses so I field a lot of knights to make him happy...
I hope to find him on the controls in a few years so CA hurry with the patch (preferably before he comes of age...)
No succession war in my home, please...

Try Civil War. It works like a charm.
Funny thread. Too bad my nephews (well, not actually...) don't like TW at all. They just wanna play Need for Speed and FIFA 2007.

I'm going to try that. We don't have cable but a simple LAN connection would work.
It wasn't possible last year. My teen-age daughter had a computer in her room.

Big mistake, that.
Now the computer's in the living room. LAN connection, here we come.

Yes, I must admit I thoroughly enjoy playing LAN games with my son. I must own at least 20 RTS titles that we play together.
I usually win at Star Trek Armada and C&C Generals, but he owns me in Battlefield 2, Supreme Commander and Starfleet Command 3. Pretty evenly matched in Starcraft and Stronghold 2. We don't do a lot of RTW or M2TW battles, because I win most of those so he doesn't enjoy them that much.
We both wish that it would be possible to play a true multi-player version of M2TW on the strategic map, though. I guess that is impossible though, isn't it?

I'm hoping my son will grow up to open an evil petting zoo.

You can play either battles or the campaign, but not both (campaign would be hot seat)

Great stories! I have a five year old daughter and she loves to wtch me play. She really likes the assassin clips. The funny thing is she also likes to check on the positives and negatives with happiness etc.. in the city detail screens. I think I will show her how to run a custom battle soon.

I am unfamiliar with hotseat mode. It sounds cumbersome. Can anyone explain how this would work in a Lan environment, please?
Caliburn 00:52 04-18-2007
I love the idea of hotseat, it reminds me of the times when all my three brothers and I gathered around our computer and played games like Scorched Earth, Star Control and Auts... Too little elbow space, keyboards freezing due to six commands at the same time, and great, grand laughs.
I don't know how it works in M2, though.

Tell me about it. Some of them have had fairly high chivalry traits though and really good technology skills for building rams and such. Sadly no command stars and boy their authority rating sucks. Are all young guys push-overs today?

Hot-seat means you play with one machine only, all players taking turns after each other. That's why battles don't work and should be auto-resolved.
My children and I regularly play hotseat Heroes III together, even my daughter likes that game and used to get her boyfriend to play it when he came round. So, we have a multitude of saved games with various combinations of siblings and friends. Typically, my youngest son is the universally acclaimed expert at it, especially the battles.
My two sons and I also play WoW and Planetside together, all being members of the same Guilds and Outfits. Its a great way to spend quality time with your children.
Thats one reason why my son and I were trying out the MTW2 Hotseat mod. it was a real dissappointment when we found it didn't work for defensive battles. I really can't understand why CA having taken so long sorting this shorcoming out.
With a bit of luck, though, CA will release an updated (read: working) version of the hotseat functionality with the expansion.
Doug-Thompson 04:58 04-20-2007
The only game I ever had with a working hotseat feature built in was "Combat Operations: Barbarossa to Berlin." It was too complex for my kids, but it worked very well.
I don't understand why more turn-based games don't have this. I would have killed for a naval wargame like this when I was a teen-ager, where you pre-choose your moves and let the computer play it out for you. It would be very good for the M2TW strategy game.
You're forgetting Heroes of Might and Magic ! Especially HOMM3 has a hotseat mode that still gets a lot of play in our house.
Unfortunately the wife and I both prefer Necomancers, so sometimes we have to throw dice to decide who plays what side...
