'Rap haters!' - At least you got us to acknowledge that it's theoretically a type of music.

I'm so out of touch with the wonderful world of 'music' (^and I'm not even going to acknowledge rap as a type of music^) that I don't even know the names of all the stuff I don't care for/ dislike/ hate. One might go so far as to say that I'm musically challenged. For instance:

The only Bebop I'm familiar with is the place on the Tiense where I have a few drinks occasionally with friends. Incidentally, Albert Niland performed there last Monday, and I was moved to buy his cd on the spot. No clue what label to slap on him, though.

So basically, turn on the radio or tune in to MTV (or something similar), and there will be a huge chance of me disliking whatever they're playing.

I hold a special place of pure disgust in my heart for schlagers (my father likes Laura Lynn and Frans Bauer ) and I hate carnival with the burning intensity of a thousand desert suns. Instead of scantily clad ladies like they have in Brazil, we get a festival of distaste where I live, complete with the aforementioned bad bad music. Why yes I'm a grouch, why'd you ask?

Hate to say it, but almost every American band I have ever heard, sounded like cack when I had the choice of British bands.

Hate Emo and Screamo, Hardcore Metalcore, that pussy american heavy metal stuff, slasher music, jazz, rap and it's associates, some of the cack brit pop stuff like the A monkeys (ugh!).

I do like Oasis and Kasabian though
Maiden, Genesis Led Zep, the fab four, TooL, Vivaldi, Camel, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Evermore, MUSE, Elton.

    I like alot of stuff.

Song I hate the most... hmm... the 200 olympic song, "absalutley everybody, everybody everybody, absalutley everybody! in the whole wide world! Everybody dreams and everybody breathes, absalutley everybody" Uhg, oh dear god i rememeber it! Ah it will be in my head as I sleep.

Also known as bebop, Bop was a radical new music that developed gradually in the early '40s and exploded in 1945. The main difference between bop and swing is that the soloists engaged in chordal (rather than melodic) improvisation, often discarding the melody altogether after the first chorus and using the chords as the basis for the solo. Ensembles tended to be unisons, most jazz groups were under seven pieces, and the soloist was free to get as adventurous as possible as long as the overall improvisation fit into the chord structure. Since the virtuoso musicians were getting away from using the melodies as the basis for their solos (leading some listeners to ask "Where's the melody?") and some of the tempos were very fast, bop divorced itself from popular music and a dancing audience, uplifting jazz to an art music but cutting deeply into its potential commercial success. Ironically the once-radical bebop style has become the foundation for all of the innovations that followed and now can be almost thought of as establishment music. Among its key innovators were altoist Charlie Parker, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Bud Powell, drummer Max Roach, and pianist/composer Thelonious Monk. -- Scott Yanow
Essentially: a bunch of very fast solo's which barely contain melody or structure and are utterly uninteresting.

It's all basic 4/4. But you're right that some DJs can actually turn it into something halfway decent.

    On Rap:Hip Hop:

I view it as a modern kind of 'folk' music (like country). The lyrics are almost always more important than the music, there's often a message and because of the simple song structure it's almost universally accessible.

    On Rock:

I find most recent bands pretty uninteresting for some reason, maybe because I'm getting old, but the last great 'new' band were imho the White Stripes, I haven't had a 'wow, great new band' moment since them. I still don't get what's supposed to be so great about the Artic Monkeys for instance. And I find Coldplay highly overrated, though their songs do have a nice sing along feel which is often their saving grace, the music itself is often too repetitive (just a chord scheme repeated over and over) for my taste.

    On Schlagers:

Shhh we've got the Americans convinced that we Europeans are refined and sophisticated, don't bring this up !

Rap is basically a single/double/triple beat and also has a text, which combines with the beat. It's classified into different cathegories...

Old school rap (Nas), Pure rap (Eminem - his old songs, and some of his new ones...) and others...Rap is basically about expressing hardships, not all this new ****.

Hip hop is basically a funky beat, with different texts. It's not actually a music, it's something like... I don't know, it's something weird, and it makes perfect dancing music. All these new guys are from the hip hop part, like the Black Eyed Peas or Nelly.

    So, it's a music.
