Mostly I find the listed troops are reasonably effective against other infantry, however as stated they are spectacularly useless against cavalry...

Try this, one unit of border horse (scots) and one unit of maxed out heavy Billmen (english)... You control the horse men and at the start of the battle turn your horsemen to face away from the billmen and await their charge. You will lost some horses on the charge but then speed up time and watch your horsemen kill the rest of the billmen while taking no further casualties...

They aren't spectacular against infantry even. Back in my Spanish game, defending Jerusalem against a jihad, I had a couple of units of Unhorsed Knights in the garrison. In one particular fight, a unit of those unhorsed knights came up against a unit of Tabardariyya in the streets, well away from the walls so no tower missiles came into play. Both units charged, neither unit got any help. The unhorsed knights lost about 20 men and killed the Tabardariyya to the man. The axemen spent the majority of their time parrying blows from swords.
Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

It looks like CA only fixed the cavalry part and neglected to increase attack speed. If the bug were completely fixed the Tabs would still lose but not so disastrously.

For now it seems 2H Axe units are best used for flank attacks only, not for frontal assaults.

Nah they do better against infantry as well post-1.2. Having the extra attack animations helps them a lot.

No 2 handed swords are not affect by the bug.
