Soundcard problem

i had problems with my computer last week and had to reinstall xp over my original version fix it. now it won't play sounds and windows media player says "There is no sound card
You either do not have a sound card installed on your computer or it is not functioning properly. If you do not have a sound card installed, you must install one before you can listen to audio in a digital media file. If you do have a sound card installed, refer to its documentation to troubleshoot the problem.

i do have a soundcard, but i dont think i have drivers for it as it's supposed to be on board sound? i really am clueless. any ideas? Thanks!

On-board sound chips require drivers to work as well. The manufacturer is generally Realtek but you may have to consult your mobo manual to see which sound chip it is so that you can download and install the accurate drivers.

I'll second what LEN said. Right-click My Computer and select 'manage'. Then click Device Manager. Look for entries that say 'Unknown Device' or devices that have a '!' over them. That would almost definitively point to a driver problem.

Did you install the other mainboard drivers from the CD? There should also be sound drivers on that CD and if you do not have a CD, look on the manufacturer homepage , though you should at least know what sort of mainboard you have, one place to find that is the manual, another the package if you still have it.
