Thread: Sage Advices For War (Or Not)

Default Sage Advices For War (Or Not)

    1. Your general must fight. Let him lead the charge against the phalanx and he'll sweep 'em away!

    2. When you see enemy cavalry, rush the archers to confront them. Fire and charge when they're close!

    3. Your Roman infantry fight better with their swords, so don't bother throwing their pilum.

Wow, im sure all of them would work brilliantly, and most certainly wouldnt result in the destruction of your force!

Yeah, man, I think the general must be kept somewhere behind... He's a too valuable personality to send him right in the middle of the massacre... The AI practices that and it loses its commanders often.

    Btw, how about this thread?

More Sage Advices(sic) For War (Or Not):

    4. Put your units in loose formation just before melee starts, and tight formation while under archer or artillery fire.

    5. Whatever happens, meet elephants and chariots with cavalry, but make sure not to outnumber them so that your riders are free to swing away!

    6. Your army looks better from the right. Don't face your enemy's army when they maneuver during the start of the battle. Show them your pretty right side, or your back side if you like, just not the ugly shield side and definitely not your front!

    7. Cantabrian Circle is useless against enemy foot archers. For the love of God don't use it!!!

But a straight head on charge against a tight phalanx? That's :

    9. Romans rarely armoured their feet. So always fight on the downhill side so that you are closer to exposed toes.

    10. Galllic Generals were generally chosen as being the best in their village at dodgeball. Thus use them for attracting onager fire as they have the best "dodge" stats of all troops.

    11. Archers are lightly armoured, and therefore are agile on the battlefield. Use them to face cavalry charges as they can swiftly dodge the horses and pull down the riders!

    12. Place all your missile units (archers and horse archers) in a column formation with your onagers right at the back of the column. That way, you can create a real dense concentration of arrows.

Before charging your infantry make sure that they have jogged all over the map, so they are well wormed up. There's nothing they hate more than to go on to battle without a proper worming up session, and god forbid, spring a muscle or an ankle.

So that's what I mean, general must be kept behind otherwise he'll "hit the road" quite soon. :)

Ah, I gave you a wrong link, sorry. I meant this thread. I just don't really understand how "The Cardinal Rules of War" differs from "The Sage Advices of War"...

the difference between this thread and that other PRETENDER strategy thread is that we must always follow this thread to the letter. :D

    14. Armor Piercing enemy infantry are dangerous! As such, only meet them with your highest armored troops, to negate the enemy's advantage!

    15. When being hit by superior artillery and archer fire, your army must stay as still as they can. Do not advance forward! This is called the "playing dead" trick. Don't worry about the heavy casualties this will cause, it is only an illusion to fool your enemies!

    16. When the foul enemy starts shooting at you with onagers, set all your legions to the testudo formation, and huddle them close together (exactly like in Kuni's brilliant point 16, the play dead defence.) Remember, two shields are better than one! This also works against cavalry!

    18. infintry like the moral boost of arrows hitting the enemy while fighting them, so only turn fire-at-will on after your infintry is engaged with the enemy. friendly fire improves moral.

    19. Never ever attack cavalry with your chariots. That is very dangerous. Rather put your chariots to good use by using them to get rid of the enemy phalanx formations.

always solve the war using peacetalk, never try to resist when enemy siege your city,it is better you let your city fall into enemy hand to prove you have no will to fight.....

Morale is a powerful weapon. When faced with a huge army, send in onagers only. In groups, onagers will scare them all away!

Remember-your Elephants are immune to phalanxes & love the smell of bacon!
Always make sure your general is first into battle.
Remember, cavalry are smaller & lighter than elephants-so use 'em to pick off problematic pachyderms!
