7th through 10th pretty tight on this list for me.

The funny thing here is that Rommel is actually leading over Guderian and Manstein. That's something I didn't expect to see.

I'm surprised Patton doesn't have more votes than he does -- I figured he'd be neck-and-neck with Rommel.

I'm surprised at the poor number of votes for MacArthur and Slim. More bias against the Pacific theatre?

MacArthur wasn't high on my list (to showy for me)
Slim however, he was one great general.

The problem with Slim again is that not many have read about the Burma campaign.

Well, there's no doubt that Mac' could have filled a chair in dramatics at almost any major university -- gotta agree there -- but it isn't as though great generals in the past haven't played up their showmanship as well. I have a lot of respect for MacArthur's strategic ability and solid tactical command.

'Duck is very probably correct as the the reason for the short support for Slim (who I'd label the best Brit general since Wellington).

I agree. For all of Mac's problems with his own 'cult of personality' he was a master of the Pacific battlefield. He won battles and he kept his men alive.

General "Was sichst du?" outscoring his chief of staff? This does not compute. Ludendorf may have gone on to become a Nazi, but he was easily the better general of the two. Hindenburg was khan to Ludendorf's Sabotai at best.

Well, he kinda screwed up in Korea, pretty bad actually. In the Pacific campaign his forces were just better overall across the board. Still, it takes alot of organizational skill to pull off the island campaign, so I'll make him my head quartermaster hehe.

Gen. Bradley actually said something like MacArthur's plan in Korea would have been laughed out of the classroom at the General Staff school, had he not had his image built up so much at the time.

    Yeah.

Rommel was very skilled but what Manstein did in Russia was simply amazing. I think the same argument for Slim applies, although obviously not as much.
