Instead of firing 6 barrels then reloading it discharges all 36 hence much longer reload break afterwords

Barrage if you cannot afford to reload in between and know that you want to keep firing (you cannot stop firing once it begins and you cannot move them away until they finish reloading, unless you exploit by telling them to melee)
Want gunpowder, mongols, and timurids to appear when YOU do?

export_descr_unit, add scotland to the factions line for the monster ribault.
export_descr_buildings, add scotland in the brackets of the buildings which allow construction of the unit

Same as single shot/full auto in your run of the mill FPS.

If you're using your ribault to snipe across a battlefield, normal fire is better. If, on the other hand, you have quite craftily hidden 8 monster ribaults right behind the keep's gate for the sole benefit of the poor souls pushing the ram on the other side, then by all means, barrage them with a well-deserved snicker into tiny, teensy little confetti-men. Think of it as a Leon moment, when the bad guy stares at the lonely pin in his hand.

I don't think there is a hit to accuracy when using barrage fire. Not according to the projectile file anyway.

    There isn't any directly, but.

Think about it : you're firing at something at long range with a notoriously unprecise gun. You're bound to miss 9 times out of 10. Now which is better : missing with one barrel, or missing with all 32 at once ?

IMO it's better to fire more continuously, with the target getting a little bit closer and a little easier to hit with each shot, rather than launching a massive salvo, badly mangling three crows and an unlucky sheep, then reloading... reloading... reloading... and being squashed by your charging (and unimpressed) target. You'll still miss a whole lot mind you, but when they get close enough you'll still have enough bang to fire a decent barrage, and a lucky hit or two on the way is not impossible.

Anyhow, ribaults are shotguns, and should be used as such : one massive BOOM point blank after telling the enemy to say "Cheeeese !". But if you absolutely have to work long range, I'd go with single shots.

It's just that much harder to use your shotgun if it takes minutes to load it... Hard to time that artillery. Would be better if there was some information when the unit was fully loaded, ready to fire (as long as you don't turn them). I might even like it if artillery required another confirming click after the first order to shoot up some enemy unit. That way, you could hold fire until the critical moment. Imagine it like this:
General (already shouted hoarse): "hold... hold... Hold!... HOLD!... HOLD!!!... FFIIRRE!!!!"
    People know what they do,
And they know why they do what they do,
But they do not know what what they are doing does
