    Hi all,

Although in the MTW each faction has specialist units (English Longbow etc), does anyone know how CA have handled the issue of Mercenary specialist units? Throughout the middle ages, armys and kings made extensive use of mercenarys to provide specialist skills and elite units. Just to name two, I'd want to use Genoese Crossbowman and Swiss Pikeman. Does anyone know how these units are raised or recruited in the game?

Perhaps like in MI when you see the ships sailing around the Eastern(Southern) side of Japan. They land where they want to. This could be the way the mercenaries move around, and offer you their services. But anything is possible.

Interesting idea, but it may well be more accurate and more interesting if emmissaries could recruit them. Imagine your in game on the strategy map, you move your emmissary into a province in northern Italy and a dialogue comes up saying 'do you wish to recruit 'Geneoese Crossbowman'?', if you click yes the unit appears at your nearest castle the next turn. Or perhaps you could have a building like the portugese trading post, called a mercenary hall, where you can recruit mercenaries of all types.

Me thinks there will be rebel or 'ronin' provinces too. These would serve as the mercs you seek. Ally with these leaderless scum, and perhaps they will send help in one of your attacks on your neighbors...

In STW, we can't 'hire' and band of Portuguese papist gunnies to go join the battle...

Or you could bribe the rebels to help you out in a battle in a near by province. Then sometimes, the rebels could take your money and your enemy money but help neither one. They just sit there and laugh at the two fools battle out to death.

Yeah but then, they would have to fight the winner so they would loose anyway. Unless they routed off the field.
