They are already free, and because of you, they must live in constant fear of battle and your rowdier soldiers.

Of course they are already free, once they have seen our forces, they know the liberation has come. They live in fear because of your brutal oppression.

Once again, I am not a tyrant. You have a small band of desserters attacking helpess farmers, and impaling them upon stakes in their own fields! I would be most grateful if you would discipline them, as I am not really in a position to do so, what with your armies in the field and all.
