Archers easy, because you get more ammo and can set fire to them.
Archer auxilia hands down - main reason - more ammunition.....
I only use peltasts if I can't get archers. Archers can actually destroy an enemy unit because they have enough ammo. Peltasts only start making a dent then run out of ammo.
Horse Archers are THE best though! Why can't I vote for Horse Archers!?
S-U-C-E-S! That's the way you spell... suces?
Peltasts are awful in RTW - almost worthless. Archers - esp. the more powerful ones - are uber. I recall my Romans and Seleucids machine-gunning the AI from afar. It struck me as horribly unrealistic and not very fun gameplay.
I'd strongly recommend the RTR and EB mods, partly because they weaken archers a little and boost peltasts a lot. Quite aside from the realism issue, it means that you value both unit types: the peltasts are great for killing heavy infantry (esp. phalanxes); the archers (or slingers) are great for killing peltasts.
for me it's not an ammo thing, it's a range thing, the range of the archers just pwns all, especially from ontop of a hill. Archers from behind a phalanx is the best way to take out chariots IMO.
