Default Welcome to the future: cyberwar

Russia accused of unleashing cyberwar to disable Estonia

A three-week wave of massive cyber-attacks on the small Baltic country of Estonia, the first known incidence of such an assault on a state, is causing alarm across the western alliance, with Nato urgently examining the offensive and its implications.
While Russia and Estonia are embroiled in their worst dispute since the collapse of the Soviet Union, a row that erupted at the end of last month over the Estonians' removal of the Bronze Soldier Soviet war memorial in central Tallinn, the country has been subjected to a barrage of cyber warfare, disabling the websites of government ministries, political parties, newspapers, banks, and companies

Without naming Russia, the Nato official said: "I won't point fingers. But these were not things done by a few individuals.

"This clearly bore the hallmarks of something concerted. The Estonians are not alone with this problem. It really is a serious issue for the alliance as a whole."

OK, so the cyberthing is interesting (next time we are at war, will we even know it?) but in the short term its the fact that its yet another example of the ex-spook in the kremlin's "robust" approach to foreign affairs that worries me a bit more.

You might want to edit spook EA, it means something completely different in the States.

Yeah, I read this as well. Pesky Ruskis.
There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

    It does?

Spook = spy, to EA, anyway.

The first definition of spook in the States is spy. Maybe way, way down in the far reaches of the South it might still mean 'black guy' but I think it's mainly an anachronism at his point. Good eye, though, IA. You've spotted a few those confusing differences in the way our countries speak the same language that can lead to offense. (The Micheal Jackson 'spastic' comment was a funny one )

    HAHAHAHA
The future is ours (programmers, hackers(not me), computer nerds, cyborgs, etc).

I would imagine the TV series "Spooks" would cause some confusion.

Not too hard. I am aware of fourteen year olds who have managed to totally scrap websites out of boredom and get away with it. Not saying it's not a Russian move, but I would have done something else. Perhaps make a lewd watermark on every page.

Its very good example for everyone who can't understand why Poles never trust Russia. This country can not be compared to democracy.
    They behave like medieval mongols.

This has a lot to do with Poland, for those who have not yet figured it out.

So just go to the eastern border and cut all the phone lines already.

As with most communications these days they usually travel through satelites and not through cable's. Bandwidth is very very expensive. Cutting all the cables to the communcation dishes would also put a near dead stop on their economy also. So it's not so easy.

Hopefully this will bring more light to Chinese hacking the US computers, but doubtful.

Funny I thought it was about estonia. What does a massive cyber attack on Estonia have to do with poland?

Ride out of the steppe firing their bows, moustaches waving, burn the houses, kill the men, rape the women and nick the household animals (with the occasional mix-ups owing to inebriation) ?

Most quaint and spectacular, no doubt.
"Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. --- Proof of the existence of the FSM, if needed, can be found in the recent uptick of global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. Apparently His Pastaness is to be worshipped in full pirate regalia. The decline in worldwide pirate population over the past 200 years directly corresponds with the increase in global temperature. Here is a graph to illustrate the point."
