Well I think we did answer your first question. In answer to your second:
There were ten cohorts in a reformed Marian Legion and the first cohort was the senior of these. The Centurians were the most experienced and the legionaries the most grizzeled. The first cohort also carried the Legionary Eagle, the Legion's standard.
At some time during the reign of Augustus the size of the centuries in this cohort was doubled from 80 to 160 and their number reduced from 6 to 5.
