That was a French group of soldiers who took two ladders down from the wall and started walking away with them. I've also had what you said happen to me except they marched to almost the edge of the map with a battering ram, then turned around and came back. It's sad but I couldn't stop laughing. Needless to say the siege AI doesn't seem to be too smart.
