Actually I have indeed the (subjective) impression that this is a new trend.
Years ago it was rather "now with 10% more" - nowadays it seems to be more difficult (at least here in Germany) to have customers accept price increases.

One of the nicest examples I have seen recently is the new packaging of Moevenpick ice cream (a premium ice cream). They managed to reduce the content by 10% while actually making the box look like it contains more than before - I bet they had some designers work really hard on that one...
