Thread: Best defensive positions and other interesting places

Default Best defensive positions and other interesting places

Just post some great/interesting places found of the campaign map.
M2TW has a lot of great places for defense on the campaign map, sometimes you just stumble upon them and such. Here's a good one:

Gibraltar at the southern end of Spain has almost vertical rock slopes in many areas and most attacking units would be too tired to even raise their shields. The cliffs on the sides channel the enemy into concentrated volleys of fire from higher up.

    Hi,

Gibraltar...the Pyrenees...mountain locations are great for defensive strategies. Bridges are also great places for this.

I'm a bit deranged, you know. So I have to ask. Where is that battle editor?

There's no shortcut or .exe I could find. But I want to enter it so badly, please!

its in 1.2 patch this is taken from readme
    Battle Editor

This tool is unsupported by either Creative Assembly or Sega, it is
provided as is and there are no guarantees that it is free from bugs.

You can run the Battle Editor in two ways:
    1. Run Medieval2.exe with the commandline switch:

    medieval2.exe --features.editor

    2. In the config file add the following option:

    [features]

    editor = true
    it is then in options.

You better have a lot of missile troops there because chances are the enemy will never reach you due to pathfinding.

While not related to the battle editor, I have to comment on finding defensive situations being rather annoying and almost it and miss. At times I've deployed on the campaign map in places where I'd have thought my army would be elevated and able to defend well only to find I'm either heavily covered in forest (negating archers significantly) or actually on the far side of the hill with the attackers on top.

Are there any tricks I'm missing in being able to "read" the campaign map better or is this all trial and error, or do people just "deal with it" as I've been doing in my games?

Does anyone have any pointers on that? I would _really_ be interested because I have a huge Mongol problem. When I happened to stumble on a good defensive position a few turns ago they suddenly weren't so tough.

Hills on the campaign map can be deceptive as you say. However, the larger mountain masses usually have slopes, and when your army is closer to the central ridge/peak than the enemy army, you get a significant advantage. This can often be achieved by attacking the enemy standing next to the mountain range. Just move to the "red" (enemy controlled) square with the most elevation above the enemy occupied square first, then issue the attack command. Works well against the Mongols. Never fear, even if you are the attacker, the 1.2 AI usually comes after you. So just attack on the campaign map to fight a defensive tactical battle.
