You must be online even for single-player and there is no LAN play? I heard something about an "offline mode" that allows you to play for a few days without signing on before expiring....
You have to be online if you want your achievements to be recorded on the bnet servers. If you don't, you can play all the same, except your achievements won't count.

There's no LAN play yes. Sucks :(
