Hmm. I rearranged the cables a bit so the circulation should be better, and that does seem to have helped lowering the average running temp to around 50 degrees. Dunno yet if that's what's been keeping the comp stable, or if I've just been lucky and not stumbled onto whatever else could be the culprit since then.

My disks
I installed HDDLife 2.8.96.
It shows my 1st HDD (WDC WD1200JD) is at 38, and 2nd (WDC WD2500KS) is at 43. Both are not cooled, but I have large Chieftec case.

Processor in general 39-40 degrees, the two cores 43-44 at the moment. I've seen the latter go up to 50 at times of heavier use without any noticeable ill effects mind you.

Huh. I tried a bunch of different things (including updating the BIOS and pretty much everything else I could find) and something apparently did the trick, as the comp doesn't freeze up anymore. By what I've seen anyway.

Having gotten that out of the way, there's a rather less major but still quite annoying performance issue I'd rather try to get rid of - the audio output is kinda screwy and WMP hogs CPU even when it isn't playing anything - but I should probably make a new thread for that.

Why on earth would you want to use WMP anyway ? I've never needed it, ever. You can use stuff that's freely available for all your media needs, and, I daresay, much better (although others can feel free to argue that point).Originally Posted by Watchman

For movies and such, try VLC (videolan.org).
Therapy helps, but screaming obscenities is cheaper.

It's not me, but my brother (whose comp this strictly speaking is, more or less). He gets snarky when it doesn't work properly, and listening to music is about the sole "free time" pursuit he uses it for. Anyway, fixing the WMP-processor issue turned out to be a rather simple thing albeit it took several hours of shifting through Google to figure it out (it had an issue with the folder it had been set to monitor for the media library; changing that fixed the processor-hogging issue in one go).
Now if I can only figure out why the heck the audio output has annoying little pops and suchlike I'll be set.

Well, it's your (and/or his) call.
As for the audio, do the "pops" occur with other software (e.g., winamp) as well ? As always, try to isolate the problem: crappy sound card, loose/crappy wire/connector, software, etc.
Therapy helps, but screaming obscenities is cheaper.

As for the audio thing:
You might make an attempt by raising or lowering the hardware acceleration (in Control Panel - Sound, etc. - one of the tabs should have a gauge for acceleration). I suggest trying out the possible settings there one at a time until your tests reveal success.
If it returns negative results, perhaps as Blodrast says it's an obsolete broken piece of hardware you have or bad connection -- something in that direction?
Otherwise I speculate an evil spirit has seized control of your machine and it requires paranormally gifted people -- or something in that direction -- to aid you in removing it :)
And if that is not the case, there is always the hammer to... "remove" your troubles, though I wouldn't recommend that direction if you know what I mean :) I've seen people who actually lose self-control and destroy the machine or parts of it in rage.
