    Default Strange performance issues

    My comp's been having strange and inexplicable issues as of late that leave me entirely baffled, and thus I submit the matter to the attention of those far more learned than myself.

    The thing is that once the machine's been running for a while (a few hours on the average) it starts becoming increasingly slow at doing anything, be it opening a folder, running a program, or even changing between open folders and suchlike. And there does not appear to be any perceivable cause for such slowdown; the temperatures seem okay, fans run properly, nothing odd about the paging file or RAM sizes or other memory-use things, ditto for processor load (there is a strange pattern where the load of the first core occasionally goes up to nearly hundred for a while and then returns to normal, without any running process showing any such processor consumption - but this happens more when the comp is still working smoothly). In other words everything should work without a hitch, but... doesn't.

    To boot this is a very recent phenomenom, and I can't really recall doing anything that might have affected something vital.

    Would this be a job for the Ghostbusters (or the repair man anyway), or are there do-it-yourself ways to try to track down and fix the matter ?

    Hmmm, maybe spyware (and similar dirty stuff) is slowing down the PC. I don't know, but it seems like something I've encountered myself before as well when I read your explanations.

    Maybe the harddisk is too fragmented? Even then, it'd seem unlikely that it could be so slow.

    Do you notice anything about the physical CD/DVD drive?

    Maybe you need to update the motherboard BIOS?

    I think more information is needed :)

    Spyware and such is somewhat unlikely - there's several programs specifically against that stuff active and diligently kept up to date on the comp, and I make a point of scanning for anything that gets through every time I've been to the Internet.

    Fragmentation is unlikely to be the issue - neither of the two drives is particularly fragged at the moment, and the defragger is in the opinion neither needs to be defragged either.

    The disk drives are behaving themselves - the CD drive had a strange habit of occasionally spontaneously starting to spin really fast without doing anything until you opened and closed it, but it stopped that some time ago.

    While the BIOS certainly might not be the newest, I'd prefer to leave it alone if possible (the *last* time I tried upgrading one, I had to get a whole new MB... ) and it'd be rather odd for it to only start acting up now and not earlier.

    I'd be quite happy to provide more information, but frankly I've no idea what might prove useful; what would you think I should dig up ?

    Hm, do you have processor with two cores? From your writing it seems. I'll say from my head, maybe one core doen't function well, and that cause strange hang up. Do you still have warranty?

    [I'll talk with friend who has computer service, and sells hardware and software to see what might be can a problem.]

    Download Hijackthis from here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/p...php#hijackthis

    Rename the downloaded file from "HiJackThis_v2.exe" to "HiJackThis_v2xxx.exe"

    Create folder: to C:\Hijackthis

    Copy the file to this folder.

    Run Hijackthis, accept the agreement.

    Click the "do a system scan and save a logfile" button. If you can't see that button, click the "Main menu" button near the bottom, then the button should appear at the top.

    Close hijack this, do not fix anything with it, nor do anything else but the system scan and logfile.

    Post up the contents of the logfile here inside code tags [code][/code]

    Uninstall, from add/remove programs in the control panel, the Logitech Desktop Messenger (crapware) first and let me know if performance improves at all. It's hardly surprising your PC is slugglish running that lot.

    Huh, I'd noticed the Desktop Messenger was weird earlier and kept it turned off, but is it really *that* nasty ? Will remove tho'.

    Symantec... there was some sort of antivirus/firewall thingy which was a pain in the ass so I uninstalled it, and the only stuff related to the firm I could find with a cursory search is some kind of LiveUpdater thingy that's likely rather redunant now. Should I delete that thing too ?

    I'm usually of the opinion that if it worked fine before and suddenly starts acting up, it's probably not the BIOS. To put another way: if it aint broke, dont fix it. I've seen a BIOS flash fix a myriad of issues- but normally they're issues that you see from the getgo.

    I was hoping it'd be a disk defrag problem, but since it isn't, it's probably spyware or crapware slowing it down. Are the slowdowns accompanied by lots of disk activity?

    Remove the Updater as it's a leftover bit of the Symatec Crapware that is still hogging resources. When did you install that Antivir anti virus program? Is is possible that it's running a background scan continuously?

    Nah, Antivir's behaving itself. I've years of good experience of that thing, and of the three or so antivirus thingys on this comp (on top of the built-in Windows ones) it's the only one that hasn't given any trouble and, thus, has been allowed to stay (I ended up wiping ZoneAlarm due to some compatibility issues).

    In another context I noticed I had two Java runtimes installed, so I cleaned away them both and reinstalled the latest version. Remains to be seen if that fixed the matter.
    And if it did I'm going to feel very stupid.

    Curious. I seem to have gotten rid of the slowdown issue by cleaning away redunant and/or incompatible stuff - but now the machine instead freezes completely after running long enough (4-6 hours on the average). And that's completely enough that reboot through the manual reset button happens with a few seconds' delay... and this regardless of what exactly the comp's been doing, although the less it's been occupied the longer it seems to stay alive.

    Gah. If it's not one thing it's another.

    Then if I were you I'd format the whole thing, reinstall everyting all over, and update all hardware to latest drivers (including flashing the BIOS), and keep it all clean, prevent nasty stuff from getting at it.

    But I'm not saying you should do it of course, it's all up to you. It just seems a simple direct solution that'll most likely work and maybe save time, instead of digging through everything which could take days then finding something that gets in your way, and dig once again.

    Have you checked for heat issues?
    If it takes longer to freeze when it's not busy, I'd check the fans etc, sounds like overheating to me. I know my dad's laptopn likes to freeze in a very similar pattern, with less workload, it takes longer to freeze, and I'm pretty sure it is overheating(rather old laptop).

    I swear this thing is actively trying to drive me nuts. Well, better it tries that by working properly if nothing else...

    Side note: were I to try updating the BIOS at some point, would it be a good idea to use the chip's built-in update utility accessed at system start (the new BIOS file being supplied via floppy), or should the Windows-based update utility be good enough ? I'm a bit wary of the latter as the last time I tried to use one I managed to bugger the whole BIOS and ended up changing virtually all the hardware... although this MB seems to have a built-in reinstallation feature.

    Just look for the easiest and surest way, I'd say. But please don't do anything stupid. And another thing: I'm not responsible :)

    Xiahou might have a point that it may not be necessary to update the BIOS, but it shouldn't hurt the machine either. What motherboard is it you have by the way?

    It appears that unpleasant system freeze thing isn't a heat problem anyway. It just reared its ugly head entirely in spite of the fans running at full blast and the monitors claiming the component temperatures were well within safe limits.

    Most annoying.

    I wonder if there's some obscure snag somewhere in there which the systam randomly stumbles upon on occasion. There seems to be no rhyme or reason in how these happen. Wonder if I should go and reinstall just about all the drivers, just in case...

    Personally I wouldn't flash the BIOS unless there is a real need. In the case of the previous "disaster" there was a real possibility (incompatible CPU), and if the flash hadn't gone bad, it probably would have solved your problem. In this case I've see no evidence so far that it is necessary or indeed the cause of your problem. If you can find something in the list of bug fixes relating to random crashes, etc then it would be worth it. If it only lists cpu compatibility fixes (that don't relate to your CPU) or minor error fixes then it may not be worth it.

    The lock up you're having. Is there any hard disk activity (check the HDD LED)? I expect that you tried CTRL+ALT+DEL first, so you've got a total freeze with no response from anything including he keyboard and mouse? IF the only solution is a hard reset or forced power off, hardware is likely to be the problem. I would put money on it being the CPU or poorly connected adaptor card or memory module. Memory in itself even if defective or running on incorrect timings/settings should not cause a complete lock up. The worst you would get from that is a blue screen error.

    Carefully check that any adaptor cards are firmly seated. An uneven break where the edge connection sits in the slot caused by a unevenly seated motherboard will cause a lot of problems.

    Run a continuous real time temp monitor and keep it on screen and visible. You can then leave the PC on and check it later to see the final temperature.

    Now that you've removed a lot of the bloat that was causing your initial problem post a fresh hijackthis log so we can see what else may be still there.

    The only thing slotted to the MB that's in use is the graphics card - and if that was the problem, it should have turned up long ago rather than only recently right ? The same should be the case with the CPU and memory modules. The hard drive cable connections seem to be okay assuming those could be the culprit - I checked that they were firmly attached at both ends, which didn't keep a lock-up from happening.

    It's not a heat-accumulation issue far as I can tell; the interval of the freezes is too random, and the sensors show no real tendency in any of the monitorable parts to develop excessive heat levels. Sometimes the comp merrily runs half a day and never has any issues, other times a freeze occurs within three or four hours after the previous one.

    Now that you've removed a lot of the bloat that was causing your initial problem post a fresh hijackthis log so we can see what else may be still there.

    Say, what's the rough "safe" temperature for hard drives ? Mine seem to be going to over 55 degrees Celsius over time, and I'm starting to suspect that has something to do with the lock-ups. Looking into the box it would appear that the darn bundles of wires and cables could be blocking at least one of them from the air circulation.

    51-56 for me. Around 53 and above, SpeedFan shows them with a burning flame, but they're pretty stable for me most of the time.
    Most of the time, with regular but not very intensive disk activity, it's about 53-54. And yes, one of them is not well ventilated at all.
    Therapy helps, but screaming obscenities is cheaper.

    Hmm. I rearranged the cables a bit so the circulation should be better, and that does seem to have helped lowering the average running temp to around 50 degrees. Dunno yet if that's what's been keeping the comp stable, or if I've just been lucky and not stumbled onto whatever else could be the culprit since then.
