I must read "The Merchant of Venice"!

I would also recommend the film, which is excellently shot and very atmospheric. Al Pacino does an excellent job of playing Shylock the jewish money lender. The film also highlights the hypocracy of the Venetian catholic's who spit on the Jews in public and then arrange secret meetings with them to negotiate loans and credit.
