Collecting swords

Today I got my 2-hander blade I ordered a while back, raising the total number of swords in my makeshift 'collection' to three, along with an assortment of Bokken, Shinai, Walking Sticks, and Wasters.






From top to bottom: Naval Officer's Ceremonial Sword, Two-handed Bastard sword, and Aragonese Longsword replica.



I've been doing this seriously for a few months now, my father and I are both taking lessons from a guy here in Vegas. Good Guy.

I have a Napoleonic Heavy cavalry sword, British. Found it funnily enough in a theatre in London.

A ceremonial sabre from the Indian army c.1880's has a tigger shaped pommel.

Old Ausrian Bayonet from the late 19th century (my family's) I believe and a French Bayonet c1870's

Some strange Indo-Chinese things in bamboo scabbards.

I have a Scottish Claymore in the basket-hilted style, various daggers of various makes, a Sgian Dubh, numerous hunting knives, and three old pocketknives I inherited from my grandfather. I hope to soon add a Pappenheimer rapier to this collection, or a cavalry sabre, probably in a Prussian or British style. I'll post a picture when I can.

I've got a ... knife. Living at college puts a bit of a damper on weapon collecting. Plus, I'm going for the more practical and lower cost firearms collection first.

General-Winter, if you haven't already, you should check to see if there are any ARMA guys around you. Great people for learning how to sword fight.

I always wanted to collect medievil weapons and armor... and I thought about going for the affordable replicas, but decided I wouldnt be happy until I could get the real deal, ie used ones

and they cost real money... which I dont have yet

Theatres can be good , picked up some dirt cheap replica roman short swords, in reality they were genuine French Napolionic Artillery swords .
But hey what they don't know can't hurt them

I have merely my Jin-Gum, fortunatly to me it is not a toy nor replica, many can play and collect swords... but few can effectivly use them .

but seriously general-winter i was never under the impression that there was much to be taught in the way of medieval swordsmanship, and i could never find anyone to teach it in my area,*dons hick accent* lucky city type folk.

Mediaeval swordsmanship was once as developed and complex as the art still practiced with the Samuri Sword. More so in some ways because Mediaeval longswords were used in many different ways.

There has been a lot of work in recent years to reconstruct the craft, gradually progress is being made.

Excuse me Master of the Puppets but european swordsmanship was and is just as complex and deadly as any other fighting style. I'd be willing to bet on a Student of Liechtenauer's Kunst Des Fechtens over a samurai any day.

Besides Italian Fencing I only remember Liechtenauer but there was also some sort of English buckler&short sword style. Can't remember what it is but i'll be doing my research.

Phillipvs, I got the bastard and aragonese sword from another guy on a sword forums, and the officers sword was one my father ordered as a sort of commemorative thing from his stint in the Navy.

I don't own one, but this blade is very similar to the one I imagine one of my characters wielding, if that counts. link. I've always had an eye for that style of simple, elegantly functional medieval sword. When I was a young frog I made a sword quite similar to this one out of wood, cardboard, cellotape and paint. I'd love to own a real, quality blade like that, but what would I do with it?

The other main type of sword I like is a Viking style, one of their more restrained types. If you load on too much decoration then it begins to lose that clean, elegant shape. this is the best picture I can find that that type with a quick google hunt.

Not quite a collection, but I've got a few:



Left: M1850 Foot Officer's Sword with original rayskin grip
Right: Pre-WWI M1902 Officer's Sword (Scabbard is underneath)
Center: Spanish El Cid sword from Toledo, Spain (replica)

The replica is my wife's and it completes the arrangement nicely, but to be honest I don't like replicas. At some point I'll pick up a few more authentic pieces and take the replica down for good.
