the best mod is going to be the INCA total war mod. Unfortunately we are still working on that but be sure to check our threads frequently because the work that is being done will surely pay off. But if you mean a working mod I'd vote for Europa Barbarorum. Its consistent, the people from the mod seem dedicated to it. There have been some mods that really rocked the community, like blue lotus, which artistically speaking was a wonder, but unplayable because of the bugs. And there is also another mod, with a fictional and cinematographic theme which seemed interesting.

Right, and from a non-biased point of view, you'd have:
1)Rome Total Realism or Europa Barbarorum (my favorite is EB, personally) - too much to say about both, check out their forums at the TW Center (for RTR) and here (for EB)
2)Roma Surrectum (their recent release is nice!) - there's a nice article on it in the Gahzette's First release. Centred around Rome I think, but includes other factions
3)The Crusades (although I haven't played it recently) - Capture the Holy Land as the Crusaders or defend it as the Saracens.
4)The First Triumvirate - play as Julius Caesar and conquer Gaul, Pompey and defeat Caesar, Crassus and conquer Parthia, Vercingetorix to retake Gaul or Parthia to defeat Rome's Eastern Provinces.
5)Invasio Barbarorum: Flagellum Dei - The same timeline as Barbarian Invasion, but bigger and better.

Of course, mod preferences depend largely on YOUR preferences. I like historical accuracy and historical scenarios, so EB and TFT and The Crusades and Invasio Barbarorum fit like that. It really depends on you.
My advice is to download a mod that LOOKS good, and install it in a copy folder for RTW. That way, if you don't like it, all you have to do is delete the file in which you installed the mod. And you keep a version of RTW on your computer.
    Hope this helps!

If you are looking for historical accuracy and a vanilla-like timeline, then Europa Barbarorum, Rome: Total Realism, Roma Surrectum and Invasio Barbarorum are what you're looking for. Very very very good mods and which ones will win your heart is really a matter of taste, as each one has its own strong points.

If you like fantasy, then you must definitely see Fourth Age: Total War
(what do you mean I'm biased??? )

    Ofcourse Warmaster Horus is right:

OK can I have that in idiot-sized chunks?

Install vanilla RTW / BI & patch it if required.
Copy the entire folder to a new folder.
Rename the new folder to RTW_Foo.
Apply the Foo mod to the RTW_Foo folder.
Create a shortcut to the main executable in the RTW_Foo folder.
Rename the shortcut to RTW Foo

    Am I missing anything?
I assume you can run either instance ?

Yep, that's right. Generally installation instructions are explained in the readme file.

The "biased" comment was for meliritos, who's working on Inca:Total War. Which, by the way, sounds really nice.

Not always. I think there's a mini-guide sort of thing lying around here somewhere though...

he, he i knew that was aimed at me thats why i didnt say anything. Anyway, i do believe our mod will be worth playing, check our threads here and at the TW center. A little self promoting didnt hurt anyone. But i do believe that Europa Barbarorum is a nice mod. Its just that i think the modding community needs fresh ideas and new worlds to explore, like we in the Inca mod do, or some of the other developing mods are doing.

SPQR:TW is a good mod I made that is fun if you like Realistic Long battles and are not too concerned about historical accuracy. I noticed on .Org is mainly dominated by EB and RTR fans. twcenter has more variety of some nice mods.

Historical Accuracy goes to EB and RTR, but personally I feel too much accuracy ruins Gameplay. There arent alot of SPQR fans that post here on the .org as most who play mods are not Modders themselves. As for the .Org I always considered it the MODDERS site. lol There is more information on how to mod here than TWC, but TWC has more Mod PLAYERS and descussions and their favorite mods IMO.

Anyway if you think SPQR may be your cup of tea, check out this forum. SPQR was one of few that was along with EB and RTR from the beginning. Though EB would technically be the longest since it was before RTW was released. but I speak from the actual release of RTW. I came about 2 months after RTW was released, I didnt really see EB around at the time until Trivium stepped in an gave it a jumpstart. Gaius Julius was Working on RTR and Since most of the players like 1 turn per unit and playing on Large settings. I decided to Make my own mod and thus the birth of SPQR:TW.

Asking what the BEST mods are is kinda silly because alot of people have different opinions. Best in What way? See that is the problem, as the second post above stated 5 mods, when I feel there are alot more than just 5.

Inspired by the first post, i thought maybe, just maybe we could have sth like a poll, like the Oscar event. The categories would be:

Best released mod (thats an overall look): make it EB

Most promising developing mod:I'd vote the INCA TW on that

    Most Historically accurate: EB?

Most innovative idea-theme (you know where my vote goes again...INCA)

Best 3d graphics: Blue Lotus, definitely

    Best 2d graphics:Forth Eorlingas

    Best gameplay

    Best music

    I can host the event...

Both the Org and TWC already have polls (awards) on these and other categories. The TWC ones have not long finished.

Please dont turn this thread into a self promotion thread
maybe you should make your question so:
Which is the best mod of except of this one for which you work?

Make your first download EB it completely outclasses other mods. Sorry guys but its true. When you want to move on in time peroid get flagellum dei its a good renovation of BI. After EB make sure to check out rome total realism it is a good mod as well. After the realism mods there a buncha other fun mods I suggest Rise of Perisa, SPQR, Roma surrectum, napoleon tw, crusades, blue lotus there are a lot of them but I found some fun in all of them.

Well, it's clearly a matter of personal opinion and as such it doesn't require any backing-up...

Apart from the obvious choice of FATW (:D), I'd pick End of Days and Chivalry. Can't choose amongst them...

Norman Invasion - The fate of England lies in your hands...

Viking Invasion II - Unite Britain in the best TW campaign ever!

I've played EB and RTR and now I'm playing SPQR. EB and RTR are great mods and lots of new and interesting content. But if you want epic and long battles, go with SPQR, the enemy throws full stacks at you every turn. And its the only mod I've played that I needed 5 stacks of veteran armies just to conquer greece.

Each mod provides a different experience and I think you should keep on trying them to find one that you really like.
