    Default Regional Recruitment Lacking

I think more factions should be able to recruit more regionals such as Massiliotes Hoplites. The fact that factions are limited to only some regionals is very annoying, for me it's fun getting all kinds of regional troops to mix into my far from home armies, rather than being stuck with something like akonstitai. Being limited to only a few interesting regionals and all the defaults can get boring, but having access interesting new regionals can make the experience more fresh, and make campaigns less likely to get boring.

Maybe making all these exotic regionals at very high regional MIC levels would be in order, since I don't actually think any regional unit occupies the last level, and only a few occupy the second last.

I find it really annoying that Averni can only build galatikoi kuddoln in Ankrya, they should be able to build all sorts of celtic troops there, since they are of the same culture.

Shouldn't a level 4 client government on Sparta mean that you could recruit Spartan Hoplites, since that the state has not been altered to your faction, and they can remain running themselves, for they are a client state, and are meant to provide you with military assistance from their army.

Well, as far as recruiting Spartan's and the level 4 government goes, consider this:

They aren't really a completely autonomous allied government, rather, they are a puppet state that you exercise direct control over, if not in name. Yes, you don't technically make all the decisions, but all of the big ones. Evidenced of course, by your garrisoning and conquering of that countries' capital city.

Let us pretend you are occupying Sparta. Would you want Sparta training The Ancient World's equivalent of the Delta Force? Especially when you consider it's highly likely that they'll be disloyal, and could give easy chances to start a rebellion.

Also you can only have two skins on a model for every faction (a factional and a merc. (shared with all factions) therefore certain regional units can't be shared unless we cut back a lot factional troops. This isn't true for all tough.

Yeah, the argument is a better one for other units besides the Spartans. But I agree in that I would like to see as many be available as possible - in those highest MIC's to ensure that they are not recruited in type1 or type2 (or maybe even type3) govts (if they are really good units). Gert mentions the biggest holdup with that though. But I think we are getting into more regionals now with our unit creation, and I think a number of the new units coming in will be available to many factions.

Ahh ok, so we'll be expecting more regionals, but I'm stilled bummed as to why some units wouldn't be available to some factions.

Some are model issues, the game doesn't let us. Others are because of historical reasons, don't ask me details or anything I'm no EB historian. Another reason is that a lot of units are in the makes. Also the recruitment of a few units are bugged, if I'm not mistaken, not that many tough.

I don't like that not all factions can always recruit regionals. Like for example, I was counting on being able to recruit Samnite units in my Carthaginian Campaign, but to my great disappointment I can only recruit Roraii. I'm pretty sure that Samnites revolted against Rome and aided Carthage in the Punic wars, so why can I not recruit them???

If one were to go around messing with the recruitement possibilities through the EDB, would a fairly good rule of thumb be that if an unit can be recruited through the merc pool it ought to be also recruitable from barracks for most factions ? After all, if they're willing to take cold hard cash to fight some weird foreigners, they're probably willing enough to sign up through the "regular" channels too... Plus there's already a merc skin that can be used without further ado.

Hippeis immediately spring to mind as one example. They're pretty much the Hellenic parallel to the Mada Asabara (whom just about everyone and their dog can recruit either as regionals or faction units) anyway, right ? The mounted colleagues of the Hoplitai. And by extension the same would really go for the Hippakontistai too, even if they now aren't available as mercs, seeing as how they're really just jumped-up Akontistai on horseback (okay, not really, but you get the idea - the Hellenic equivalent of the likes of Nizakhar Ayrudzi and Mada Nizhak Asabara)...

Possibly there though there would be a certain hellenic "chronic obssesion with independence" (as somebody put it on these forums) to take into accout, only hellenic nobles fought on horse back, whilst in the east, mounted combat was much more common for all classes. The nobles, surley would be the most reluctant to fight for their rulers. Afterall, they used to be the rulers until someone came along and conquered them, whilst to the common man it makes little difference whom it is who forces him to fight at spearpoint...

In general though I agree with this thread, and specificaly regarding the galatians, would it not be more historical than not to let Aedui and Arvernii recruit factionals there? Afterall, if just about anyone else can recruit the lavotaxurii and the like, it seems very unfair that the gauls can only recruit kludonon (or what ever they're called). Ok, the unit names might be slightly wrong, but atleast the units are there, and it will make Ankyra rebeling to the Gauls much more fun if they could recruit some high end units there...

We're talking about the same guys who make up the Mistophoroi Hippeis and the merc version of the Thessalikoi here, aren't we ?
    QED.
The fellows seem just as interested in money as the middle-class guys who make up the other Hellenic mercs.

The Hippakontistai would really be just the same thing, merely on lower equipement budget and expectations.

Don't they get similar faction specific troops in that same provence?

No, cause of model sharing issues.
