The ancient shields known as the Ancilia were believed to be needed for the continued safety of Rome, like the Palladium of Troy. I know they were paraded through the city by the priests of Mars (Salii) every March, but not what happened to them.

I know that the ritual associated with them was considered archaic by the 1st century BC, but Augustus clearly thought the festival of the Salii important enough to have his name inserted into the proceedings. So are there any later references to these ancient shields? Did they even make it to the time of Constantine, when you can imagine their discarding (possibly).

After all, they represented the might and fate of Rome. You'd have thought someone might have commented.

I dont know but its an interesting question. There were twelve as you probably know, yet only one of them was the real one. Plutrach told us the word comes from the word for elbow leading some scholars to think of it as more of a buckler or worn strapped around the upper arm.
