I ask because it's usually something like that which causes outbursts like this, needless to say I dissagree completely.

He certainly should have made it past Zhukov.

Its ok, the winner would be German either way.

Whats wrong with Zuckov? You have to give him credit for the encirclement at stalingrad, the defense of Lenningrad ect...

Oh, but what would Manstein have done with all those men, tanks, and resources?

In the current debate on the modern period, can I inject a bit of controversy? What is Rommel doing with the most votes? Has the 60 year PR campaign brought this about? Rommel was a talented general who acieved some success in the side show that was North Africa. But the man who beat him - Monty - only gets 7 votes to Rommel's 23. Also how can you rate Rommel in front of Manstein and Guderian - generals who fought on the main front of the war - the Eastern Front. It was here that the war was won and lost - not North Africa with 2 men and a dog. It is only right that 3 giants of that conflict are in the final. To my mind, they should be joined by a general who achieved something with nothing. A personal favourite would be Wavell whose 1940 offensive smashed an Italian army many times his size, but perhaps somebody like Mao or Ho Chi Mein would be better - men who lead soldiers who were ill equipped and severly disadvantaged to victory over large, well equipped armies, changing the political situation in their countries for a significant period of time.

Most of the issues with Rommel receiving more votes I believe was addressed in the last round.

Wavell beating the Italians in North Africa can't really be counted as brilliance. Most of the Italians were foot infantry, and the few tanks they had were inferior in quality. Once the small mobile part of the Italian army was eliminated, rounding up the foot-bound infantry was easy. At any rate, Wavell was not the equal to Rommel.

Instead of Mao, say Zhu De (or Lin Biao). Instead of Ho Chi Minh, say Vo Nguyen Giap.

Patton vs. Zhukov would've been cool.

    Subutai, however, will destroy all

Well Mannerheim wasnt even in the poll to begin with.I wonder why he is not usually even mentioned in these kind of things, while he was the only commander that actually stopped a Soviet Strategig offensive on the Eastern front.

Will round 3 be starting anytime soon?
