The Danes -- Wicked sick?

I've finished 7 long campaigns and just finished my last, playing for the first time as the Danes.

Wicked sick, I say. 75 regions controlled before gunpowder was invented. Their units are superior to everything they meet (esp. early on) and they have almost limitless numbers of them. Not only are most of their units effective against armor, they hardly have any upkeep cost. The Danish are vastly superior to other factions like the Egyptians and the Russians.

There's also the fact that they gain wicked heavy cavalry from lvl 3 Churches in towns!

The only negative part is that they lack spears from castle infantry -- (although cities can build awesome Sword Staff milita spear units). But the lack of spears in a campaign map dosn't matter as your units are superior to all others.

Anyone else found them way too powerfull?

I wouldn´t say wicked, they have superior units expects the lack of spears, but Obudushaer (not sure if the name is right) are great. Sword and axemen are superior, and their earliest castle units (excluding Peasants) are superior to anyone elses faction, expects Scottish Highlanders...
They have slow start but in time they can become greatest if they get economy running properly... Maybe only faction i could compare to be even with them is Scotland, expects that in late game Danes get better, since Scottish start getting pikes only and so on.

The danes do have excellent infantry; cheap viking raiders, huscarls, norse swordsmen and axemen and great double-duty norse archers. They still lack spears, HAs (except (no "expects") mounted X-bows) and long range missile troops. Sure you can hire crossbow mercenaries... I wouldn't say they're too powerful since other factions have strenghts and weaknesses too.

Maybe the danish strenghts fit well with your playing style? Try another game as the Turks or Egyptians for a very different mix of units.

Welcome ! and yaaaar IMO they do have an AWESOME unit roster.

I dont know, but the Danes have always in my games half of northern europe occupied... they need a good enemy... the German have too much troubles somewhere else, the Russians are far away, the Scots are every time dead and the English are fighting the France most of the time. Only the Polish can stop the Danish domination and that's really poor.

I personally thing that the Danes are the lazy man's dream. Huskarls just dont die on auto combat. I have a ton of them whith golden chevrons (turn 120). They can fight whith any foot soldiers on equal terms and cost almost nothing to build. The funniest part is that they have essayer axes to heavy cav than England and Portugal, and in some terms Poland. They only problem (as many already said) is the lack of spears and archers. But this is problem only in North Africa and the Middle East. In the rest of the map you can hire merks.
Yes i know they are expensive, but how many of them do you need? I have 5-6 spears and 4 x- bows in a field army, and no more than 3-4 armies. So i even dont build archery ranges and barracks much.
O and later on you have guns. So if you stay in Europe you have no problems.
At the end call a crusade, buy allot of crusader sergeants and have fun winning.

Well, they still have a problem dealing with HAs, and they don't have anything with a range greater than 120 (sure, Merc Xbow, but that's cheating :) ) so I wouldn't want to face a longbow or musket heavy army with them (especially in LtC which makes archers VERY dangerous) but yeah, they're probably one of my fav. factions too.
Not only do they have a great roster, they also have it great on the strat map front : they are one of the few factions to get castle academias, their generals can be born with Math trait, they get cav in churches so are one of the few cath factions able to get a horse breeder guild very fast, and with Hamburg they have like the greatest border-plug ever : capture it, and it keeps 3 of the wealthiest regions in western Europe safe, plus it can quickly send relief forces to Flanders as well, so that's 5 of the richest regions really :)

Just about any catholic faction is wicked sick. Crusades are overpowered.

Sweden is actually THE city in the game...

It has 8 resources, 2x amber(expensive), 2x iron(medium), slaves(expensive), silver(expensive) and 2x furs!(might be one more?)

Norway is a close second, with a resource or so less. Århus isn't too shabby eiher, so those 3 regions are without a doubt the best ones in the entire game.

Another nice thing about Denmark's position is that you can keep other faction merchants from getting to the Scandanavian resources by putting ships between the islands. The AI doesnt even try to ferry merchants in via the sea.

Also I just love to watch War Clerics run down fleeing enemies. Yes, Scouts are faster but just something cool about seeing a man getting his head bashed in by a guy on a horse weilding a mace.

If you want a good challenge for your Danes send them against the Mongols in open area warfare.

Stockholm is giving me 10k florins every turn... I love the Danes.

The only downpoint I have found is that they (or maybe just I) have trouble facing the Mongols, having no early horse archers. My middle eastern armies are now heavy on mounted crossbows (who are awesome in a pack btw, though they drop like flies when it comes to melee)

Well, comparing them to factions like Russia is like comparing apples to oranges. I'm planning on playing the Danes next and they do look like they have one of the best "rush" rosters in the game. In contrast, factions like Russia, Moors, Turks get a while to get started.

Also, the spear weakness is not really much of a weakness. They aren't that strong in this game. I usually just charge opposing cavalry with my own cavalry.

Also, are the axe units and obudshaer good or are they too underpowered like some of the 2H units I'm hearing off? I think certain ones like the halberds are suffering from the animation is too slow problem and I'm wondering if they are the same?
