Default The Great Debate: Floyd or Zeppelin?

    A healthy Debate on Which is Better;

    Floyd

    Zeppelin

    The The Battle Begin!

    When I was a child
    I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
    The child is grown,
    The dream is gone.
    I have become comfortably numb...

But if I had to choose one, Floyd by a long shot, because of Syd Barrett.

Too completely different styles. I have more Led Zep (every album) so I'll vote that.

But they're both great really. Except John Henry Bonham, he's the better drummer from the two bands, and IMHO the best drummer I've ever heard.

Damned tricky to decide, though. I had to say Floyd, though.

Obviously as its they who invented the beast. No Hendrix was not the guy who turned up his amp and started playing outrageously loud. It was Townsend and the Who. They invented hard rock along with bands like Blue Cheer.

Floyd is probably the greatest prog rock band of all time however. Zep the 2nd best blues based rock band behind Cream IMHO.

The Who are basicly a hard rock band that ventures into prog. Listen to Live at Leeds and see what I mean. These guys held the record for the loudest band in concert for decades.

Indeed. Although I do believe that Sabbath pinched that particular honour.

I used to like Zep when my elder brother started paying their stuff in the early 70s.

Having said that, when he brought home 'The Piper at the gates of Dawn' , 'Obscured by Clounds' and finally 'Relics' i think that Floyd would edge it, if only for the mix of stuff they did.

    Are you for real?

The Who were releasing records in 64 . Sabbath was a late comer not being formed until 69 and releasing records in 70.

I know that. I was referring to the loudest band in rock claim.

I'd prefer the Who out of the two anyway.

The intro to 'Won't get fooled again' is very nice.

I'm really don't like Pink Floyd. Their music i too boring, so I voted for Zep. Zep is good, but there are better old rock bends like Jethro Tull, The Who, Boston, Uriah Heep, maybe they are not popular as Zep and Floyd, but they got better music.

It's not a matter of playing loud. Most everyone can do that (hell, it was really the Chicago Bluesmen invented the amped-up guitar; the "beast" as you call it.) It's a matter of playing well. In that respect, the Who don't hold a candle to Hendrix.

Talking of guitarists in that case I like Brian May, Red Special connected to the Deacy Amp can give wonderfull strange and good usably sounds.

Sure Hendrix, Santana and Clapton are the best when talking of normal material.

Thats a matter of opinion. Certainly the case can be made that Hendrix is the greatest guitar player ever . Hendrix is great but again isnt pure rock. And as far as talent goes dont tell me they cant hold a candle to his band. Entwistle and Moon blow them away and Daltry has one of the best voices in the history of rock. Not to mention that when it comes to writting Pete is by far his master.

In fact when Hendix first came to England Pete was told he was stealing his act and so he went to see him. Petes reaction? He said hes not stealing my act hes perfecting it.:)

You don't have to play rock to be a good guitar player

What I do like to say is that Entwistle is the best bass player ever tho.

And now we're on about The Who, this clip has to be watched:

Yeah, I know its opinion. But don't go knocking the Band of Gypsies, now. I know the Experience was really amateurish, but you have to admit that the Gypsies were one of the most amazing bands in music history.

As far as writing, well, that's a matter of opinion, as well. I personally find the Who's songs to be really mundane, and aside from the first 15-30 seconds of listening to them perform, they get really old, really fast. And anyway, Hendrix never had the time to really get ahold of writing; however, his posthumous recordings show (at least, in my opinion) an exponentially growing writing talent.

Can't be bothered to find that "back to topic" smiley.

That said, both have merits. Zeppelin never played a bad song (as compared to Floyd with their stuff from Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother), but IMHO Floyd also wrote more good ones.

Singer: Floyd was just all over the place with this. First they had Barrett, then Gilmour/Waters, completely Waters, then completely Gilmour. They even got Roy Harper to sing on Have a Cigar. Robert Plant was consistently Zeppelin's vocalist, and better than any of 'em on Floyd.
    Edge: Zeppelin

Guitarist: Apples and oranges, as Beirut said earlier. Page is Page and Gilmour is Gilmour. But if anyone says that Page is more hard rockin', let me point you to Dogs.
    Edge: even

Auxilary: John Paul Jones is a good keyboardist. But this is where Floyd and Rick Wright shine (on?).
    Edge: Floyd

Percussion: Bonham. Mason is decent but just can't hold his own against Zep's drummer.
    Edge: Zeppelin

Writing: Zep had some pretty cool stuff in there, like Ramble On and The Battle of Evermore. But mostly, when you come down to it, they were always a blues-related band that expanded a little bit later on in their career. Floyd, with Syd and Waters and (gah!) Gilmour were all over the map.
    Edge: Floyd

So it's 2.5 to 2.5. I like Floyd better, so I'm giving the final edge to them.

Im not knocking them Saying their not as good on their instruments as Entwistle and Moon is no knock. I dont know of any better bass player or drummer.

Only watched 1 second of it. It loks like the clip from the Smothers Bros where Moon put a charge in his drums. Then he doubled it and at the end blew it up causing deafness. I remember watching this when it was first aired back in the 70s.

Yup that's the one, great clip

But it also shows clearly how Entwistle masters the bass, playing the little solo in My Generation. As if he did it since a was a baby.

When the song came out everyone thought it was Pete on guitar playing that not John on bass doing it.

Id give it to Floyd...as much as I love Zep.

Floyd were definately more creative and I rate Dave Gilmour just as highly as Page- If for no other reason than Gilmour can still do it- Page has difficulty playing his stuff these days (and has been for a long while), especially lead riffs.

I also have it on reasonable authority that there may be a Zep reformation in the works (with Jason Bonham on drums). I was initially skeptical- was thinking it would most likely just be Page & Plant but no- it is supposed to be the Zep- whey hey!

Pink Floyd and Led Zepellin are both incredibly pompous, although inspired, talented and technically accomplished - the Who (as well as the whole mod thing) were as carefully constructed as Pete Townshed's riffs; taking extra care on what clothes to wear what sort of face make on stage and what sort
    of guitar to smash.

While all three are worth a place in r'n'r history they don't really worth their hype IMO.

    Many Thanks

Gah! One is progressive, the other Hard Rock, or as Americanos call it heavy metal (j/ks!)

But uhh, I like Zep's style of musics more than Floyds, but then again, Prog is best described by genesis or king crimson.

Otherwise, rock is still ruled by King Fab Four and Prince The Who?
