    Default Fighting to Death????

when a certain unit that gets surrounded and has no where to go (while routing) your unit goes into fighting to death mode...the problem is they dont fight, I mean the enemy doesn't take any casualties and you just lose your units in a second...
does this happen only to me and do you also believe this is useless???

They do fight, although at severely reduced strength. I've seen them take one or two enemies down with them.

I lost a general once when some levy spearmen fought to the death. They all died but they hurt me.

You've gotta consider the fact that when they are fighting to the death they are :

    1. Routed level of morale (that means if they could run away they would)
If your men are already panicking, then chances are they aren't good for a fight.

    2. Surrounded - This means that your men are most likely taking on multiple enemies from various directions. 1v1 is fine and dandy, but a 3v1 fight isn't good.

3 Depleted - Most circumstances (exception militia or vs gunpowder/siege) your units will have a severely reduced number before even getting to that state.

So yeah, add those 3 things together, and despite fighting to the death, they shouldn't be doing much at all.

I like that feature, it's pretty neat. I read in a book on Roman field tactics that surrounding an enemy army from all sides was often deliberately avoided, because troops would be more likely to fight on, and so an 'escape route' was usually left, with cavalry waiting to pounce on routers of course

I don't know, it seems to me that "fighting to the death units" are far harder to kill than they normally are, simply because the surrounding enemy is too lame to stab them.

Classic Mongol tactics, along with the feigned retreat.
I have a mind like a steel sieve.
