    Default RTW and Vista!

Hail and Salutations! I posted under another thread about problems with RTW and Vista. I was told by my "Tech authority" that my problems lay in my OP not the Disks (see other post). Anyway after making appropriate sacrifices to the true RTW gods I was blessed with the ability to not only load the games on my new computer but had an incredible afternoon playing with NO PROBLEMS in either campaign or battle modes. I only hope I'm not pulling a Ullyses and condeming myself to years of RTW torment. If I can assisit any others in this please feel free to ask or send me an e-mail and I'll do what I can. No surrender, No retreat!

I removed all the RTW software off the computer. Then I re-installed RTW. At the end of Disk one, second entry it asked me if I wanted to install DirectX 9.0. I said yes - at another web site I read we need 9.0 to properly run RTW. What we're supposed to get is 10.0 with all the componets of 9.0 added. I installed everything that it asked. My campaign screen is smooth. I read where others were having problems with battle mode and with RTW shutting down but... More bulls for Jupiter. If it would help I can post my system maybe? Anyway best of luck and remember If they run go and catch them, if you catch them make them run!!

So do you need DX 9 AND 10 installed simultaneously?

My system came with dx 10 for vista. I had to install dx 9 to get the game to run.

I'm using Vista and RTW runs better on it that it did on XP.

I'm still confused - can you run DX 9 and 10 at the same time (or, rather, have both installed), so that you can play both DX9 games (e.g. RTW) well, and new DX10 ones?

    Nice sig BTW Zalmoxis

It's like this. If we were talking units for instance, DX 9.0 has infantry and archers. DX 10.0 has infantry has well with cavalry but NO archers. For RTW to work properly and smoothly you really need those archers. So in a nutshell when you have Vista with DX10 and you add 9.0 the information that you already have is immaterial, but the stuff you don't gets added. Does that make sense? May your Gods lead you where you really need to be!

Well, the technical explanation is simple.

    1) dx10 does not contain backwards compatibility libraries for earlier versions of directx
    2) dx9 does, and so M$ allow you to have both versions installed at once

I would try this, remove anything file whatever you have that is associated with RTW. Now I'm taking it that you have Vista with DX 10 already so... Once we have removed everything associated with RTW, re-install RTW but let the auto load program load it. When I tried to self load/save when I got to DX 9.0 I received the same message you did "Newer Version found cancel upload" When I let the auto do it it went through the process and up-loaded DX 9.0. I really hope this helps if not I'll post my system - maybe that can help you!

My experience was the exact opposite, actually, as automated installation failed me

If that method doesn't work, try grabbing one of the redistributable copies of dx9 (not the ones designed for online installation or any of that) - they tend to be a bit less about what's already installed
