Sometimes, I'm not as excited about dealing with a smaller combat, because I'm trying to focus on the more strategic pieces of the game (or on larger battles). However, I find that I generally do much better (except sometimes, when I really f*&^ up a battle) battling by hand.

It'd be really cool if the game could keep track of how I do in certain regions with certain numbers of units VERSUS a certain number of other units, and include that factor when deciding victory, etc. in battle. I can think of many ways to implement this in code -- too bad it won't ever happen, eh?

I suspect that the auto-calc deliberately increases the casualties above the norm. Notice that when you press Esc in the tactical screen, the game will warn you about your troops incurring greater casualties "without your leadership". The tactical engine is the heart & soul of STW - it's no surprise that the devs would like us to use it as much as possible.
