Anyway, the spartans apparently had men well into their 80s serving and dying as hoplites, so what's so special about a 57 year old olympian?

I learned in my studies that spartan men could serve up until the age of fifty after which if they had served well were eligible for an office. I didn't know they could serve after that age.
