Throw in all the different cultres etc and there is a surprise round every corner. ...

Did you make it to San Franscisco? It's only two hours beyond Sacramento in the opposite direction of Tahoe--temperate, metropolitan, and lots of style. The beauty of the Bay Area <> Sacramento <> Lake Tahoe, with the Napa Valley and El Dorado foothills in-between, is why I haven't really gotten around that much else--never had to go far to relax in a different atmosphere and be entertained (I grew up in Sac; moved away in 2003).

This thread has really driven home the fact that I would do well to go home. I don't think I'll be truly happy anywhere else, though I am trying. Maybe I should give up IT and become a travel agent, selling California destinations.

My trip was in 1989 - LA (for work) - a faceless sprawling mess all aparently built since 1960 - the sight of a motel in the style of swiss chalets with plastic snow on the roof glistening in the baking sun is the enduring memory - oh and Disneyland which was great fun
Flew to San Francisco - didn't get to see the city, but looked heaps better than LA - older and hills
Bus to Calistoga - to stay with relatives - fantastic - beautifal Napa valley, friendly feel to all the small towns and of course the wine. Felt like France
Drove with relatives to Lake Tahoe - wonderful but also wierd. California side carbon copy of the Alps, Switzerland etc - great scenery, trees, Mount Placid olympic site - but then you go over the state line into Nevada and within yards of the border it is cheap hotels and casinos. Seeing the 2 environments side by side was unreal.
Back to Sacremento by car - loverly city, nice feel especilay the old quarter.
Back to Calistoga via the back roads - fascinating trip in great countryside - each valley felt different like you went from Greece to Italy to France in about 20 miles.
    Flew home from SF
So even after a brief visit, I can understand the attraction of California....with the exception of LA. I don't miss it - I live on the Isle of Wight - paradise on earth - - but would like to visit again.

At the risk of this being a repeat of the last two posts, I was stunned by the difference between LA and SF too. Of all the big cities I have ever visited, LA was the worst. Ugly, boring. A dozen suburbs in search of a city, as the saying goes. Except for Disneyland it's a complete waste of time. Well at least for a tourist. A conglomeration of this size surely must have some places where the locals go for a good time. Or maybe they all do hang out at Venice beach all day long, flaunting their silicons and steroids.

By contrast, SF and the Bay Area are fantastic. It's bustling with life. A gorgeous city with a proper city feel, almost European, and all set in beautiful natural surroundings. I crossed the Golden Gate into Marin County and above, gorgeous. A bit windy and cold for my liking, but if I would ever move to the States I'd go to San Francisco.

A bit south-centric here, but apart from a longer Florida trip with my family, the rest comes from my one year abroad in a MS high school!
