Lived in the states in bold.*

*That is, I like to say I did, after the ungodly hours spent in Miami Airport.

Heh, I moved out here to New Jersey in the Fall of 2005. Thanks for the welcome. I like the Autumn colors out here, the cultural diversity, and most of the people I've gotten to know. I'm not fond of the unpredictable weather, traffic and population density, and general dog-eat-dog of the business environment.

I hope to get around a bit before my heart leads me back West. I'd like to see Philadelphia/Pennsylvania, Conneticut and Massachusetts. I'd really like to get up into Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine--I miss the wilder areas in California terribly (Desolation Wilderness near Lake Tahoe in particular).

Clearly, not well-travelled in American terms.

If I were to go again, what state is definitely a must see?

California, of course. If you like sun and beaches and lots of chicks in bikinis and Hollywood and theme parks and palm trees, go south. If you like quiet and Redwoods and beautiful mountains and wine country and lush valleys and lakes and rivers and orchards and rice fields, go north. Weather is generally great. Yosemite is fabulous; so is Lake Tahoe. The coast along Highway One north of San Francisco is wonderful.

San Diego/La Jolla is my favorite area to visit in southern California. San Francisco is my favorite city up north; lots to see and do in the area, and plenty of good food. Plus Kukrikhan lives there and might buy you a beer . Berkeley is just across the bay, and Marin County just across the Golden Gate.

    I live in California sooo...
Nevada(Vegas and Reno. Gotta say I like Reno a lot more as I find Vegas dirty), Hawaii(lots of family there and many of the islands), Pennsylvania(Gettysburg), Maryland(DC), and Virginia(DC and dinner lol).

You like Reno?! Armpit of the west, I say. Did you really find it to be cleaner than Vegas? I didn't think so, but then it's been a while since I've been to Vegas. My brother lives in Reno, and I lived there for a little over a year. --HATED IT-- Buh-bye .

Well if your in town on Saturday, downtown Missoula usually has an excellent (if not somewhat crowded) Farmer's Market; and on Main the People's Market, both sell really good stuff. Generally, as far as getting into the town scene, stay away from Reserve St.

If you can manage it go Rafting on the Blackfoot River outside of Bonner, very beautiful little trip, takes about 4 hours to float from Johnsrud to the Drop Off Point, but there are other Launching Points further up river.

Also check out Seeley Lake area if you have the chance (this area actually qualifies as a Rain Forest.)

Now back to in-town things; Rockin' Rudy's is a pretty interesting store, should be near Hellgate High School. Lots of little nick-knack stores downtown, and its usually pretty easy to walk everywhere (plus finding Parking can be a major hassle). If you're into the Military scene, Fort Missoula is pretty cool (this can be found on South Ave west of Reserve St.) Montana has several elite units stationed around here, I think the 591st Dark Horse Cavalry Regiment is based there, Fort Harrison out side of Helena is the birth place of the Green Berets and The Red Devils Division... Anyway have fun. Visit Glacier if you have the chance.

I just never really like Vegas when I was there(although the Houffbrau(sp?) House was awesome! But I've only been to the strip and have seen a little else but I generally didn't find it that attractive at all. Dunno why either.

But Hawaii is probably my second favoritist state next to California(of course). Now if I could only surf...

**Oh, and Alaska as well, spent four hours at Fairbanks AFB. It was cold, I had hot chocolate and threw snow at my Samoan friend who had never seen snow before so I say it counts. Kuwait to Germany to Alaska to Hawaii, stupid regional changes, from desert to temperate to sub artic to sub tropical.

It's frustrating being in Hawaii for this reason, I can't just drive to another state. To visit somewhere else I need to book a flight, get a hotel, rent a car and so on causing trips to be too expensive for domestic vacations. For the amount of time, trouble, and money I need to thrown down for some fun onthe mainland US I might as well go to Australia, New Zealand or Japan or something and at least get to see different currency. My travels outside Hawaii have all been for military service or visiting relatives,

    Smart move

You might as well pop across the border while your there. I cant believe Ive lived in NY my whole life. Well most of it. Been to Canada at least 4 times and yet I have never been to Niagara Falls. Have you been there yet?

California, of course. If you like sun and beaches and lots of chicks in bikinis and Hollywood and theme parks and palm trees, go south. Thats why it blows Fla away. There are even times during the year when you can go to the beach and water ski in the morning then drive into the mountains and snow ski at night. And US 1 is one of the most scenic highways in the US. I drove it from Frisco to San Diego. Even the rest stops are things of wonder. There was one in particular near the Hearst Castle that impressed me.

Funny that you should say that--the HQ of my company is in Austin, Texas, and for the right position, I would move there right now. I've twelve years in state service in 1) development, and 2) strategic policy and planning in IT. I only worked for a couple of years doing IT support. Now, I'm working in our North East region doing 90% IT support work--systems integration--not really my forte. I can do it, but I don't love it. Most development and policy/planning functions are at HQ, so naturally that has been my ultimate target. Assuming of course that something else altogether doesn't happen along.

At least people won't snicker at my Lucchese boots there. But you sure as hell ain't gonna catch me wearin' one of them funky-ass hats!

California and Nevada - so I have a relatively distorted view of the USA!!

However I was amazed at how different places were even when they were quite close. We drove from Lake Tahoe - thick snow, below freezing - to Sacremento - very hot, temperature in the 80's F - in under 2 hours. Throw in all the different cultres etc and there is a surprise round every corner.

    As for elsewhere

    I MISS MY CALIFORNIA!
Did you make it to San Franscisco? It's only two hours beyond Sacramento in the opposite direction of Tahoe--temperate, metropolitan, and lots of style. The beauty of the Bay Area <> Sacramento <> Lake Tahoe, with the Napa Valley and El Dorado foothills in-between, is why I haven't really gotten around that much else--never had to go far to relax in a different atmosphere and be entertained (I grew up in Sac; moved away in 2003).

This thread has really driven home the fact that I would do well to go home. I don't think I'll be truly happy anywhere else, though I am trying. Maybe I should give up IT and become a travel agent, selling California destinations.

My trip was in 1989 - LA (for work) - a faceless sprawling mess all aparently built since 1960 - the sight of a motel in the style of swiss chalets with plastic snow on the roof glistening in the baking sun is the enduring memory - oh and Disneyland which was great fun
Flew to San Francisco - didn't get to see the city, but looked heaps better than LA - older and hills
Bus to Calistoga - to stay with relatives - fantastic - beautifal Napa valley, friendly feel to all the small towns and of course the wine. Felt like France
Drove with relatives to Lake Tahoe - wonderful but also wierd. California side carbon copy of the Alps, Switzerland etc - great scenery, trees, Mount Placid olympic site - but then you go over the state line into Nevada and within yards of the border it is cheap hotels and casinos. Seeing the 2 environments side by side was unreal.
Back to Sacremento by car - loverly city, nice feel especilay the old quarter.
Back to Calistoga via the back roads - fascinating trip in great countryside - each valley felt different like you went from Greece to Italy to France in about 20 miles.
    Flew home from SF
So even after a brief visit, I can understand the attraction of California....with the exception of LA. I don't miss it - I live on the Isle of Wight - paradise on earth - - but would like to visit again.

At the risk of this being a repeat of the last two posts, I was stunned by the difference between LA and SF too. Of all the big cities I have ever visited, LA was the worst. Ugly, boring. A dozen suburbs in search of a city, as the saying goes. Except for Disneyland it's a complete waste of time. Well at least for a tourist. A conglomeration of this size surely must have some places where the locals go for a good time. Or maybe they all do hang out at Venice beach all day long, flaunting their silicons and steroids.

By contrast, SF and the Bay Area are fantastic. It's bustling with life. A gorgeous city with a proper city feel, almost European, and all set in beautiful natural surroundings. I crossed the Golden Gate into Marin County and above, gorgeous. A bit windy and cold for my liking, but if I would ever move to the States I'd go to San Francisco.

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.

Hammer, anvil, forge and fire, chase away The Hoofed Liar. Roof and doorway, block and beam, chase The Trickster from our dreams.
Vigilance is our shield, that protects us from our squalid past. Knowledge is our weapon, with which we carve a path to an enlightened future.
