The topic is the question at hand, are there certain amounts of turns I must wait before attacking someone I signed a Ceasefire with?
I want to be an honourable and trusted barbarian, haha. Thank you all in advance.

You can attack them on the same turn that you made the ceasefire, i've done it myself; just to gain money to stop attacking them, then i bring my warriors back into the fray!
There is no limit.

Really? And no diplomatic backlash or transgressions?Originally Posted by Fate
And here I wasted 3 turns waiting... sigh. Thank you.
Anyone else have any other experiences with backstabbing a recently ceasefired faction?
Nobody knows for sure, since R:TW diplomacy appears to be rather random. Possibly there is a suspicion factor, but this certainly does not seem to deter the A.I., who can make ceasefires and attack again on the same turn.Originally Posted by Elephant

Hi Elephant,
I don't think so, as Ludens said, the R:TW diplomatic AI is often irritably random. However, it may still exist, or at least have been an intended feature that was later removed - the manual suggests that backstabbing will make relations harder to negotiate and the diplomatic responses often talk about you being an untrustworthy faction.Originally Posted by ElephantYep, thousands of times - I also do it to allies, although I often try to civilly conclude the alliance first - I'm a polite leader!Originally Posted by Elephant

There is a diplomatic backlash. Other factions responses to your diplomacy will end with reference to your previous lack of honour. Conversley giving money regulary to a faction will better keep good relations.
Overall though the sentiments expressed by other posters prevail. Diplomacy in RTW is not very transparent and often behaves in a seemingly illogical way.
Most amusing recent example:
As Perthia I was fighting Egypt. One of Egypts best diplomatic lines is their request that you become a protectorate.."..all your bases are ours..." speech. Sure enough up it pops. They want me to be a protectorate of theirs.
No matter that I am beating them, am bigger in regions and armed forces. Yes I say provided they give me one of your regions. They accept. Cool. Ive got another region and a garrison to go with it.
The best bit...I close the diplomacy screen and its still Egypts turn. They attack me breaking the protectorate status. How neat was that! Protectorate for about 3 seconds. Only downside perhaps was cash. I have a suspion that they got half my cash balance...€3000. Still it was a good value exchange. They can ask for my bases again.
Regards

Elephant - hy, i`m going to preach a little ok ? a barbarian honors his word - mostly - let me explain .. in the game it works 2 hehe
So say you are a " barbarian " faction - you know why there are labeled barbarians right ? -, make an alliance whit rome - possibly all factions -. As the "honorable" romans expend there empire there will eventually be a ... "disagreement", and they start wisiting your land more often to take "earth and water", make alliances whit your neighbors aginst you, and so on .. now after painting all the grass on of your land red whit the romans "aid" there will "honorably" request a ceasfire. - I think you did this right ? - As you are "noble" in battle - killed always 90% of the enemy - they will "appreciate you", reconsider and offer you to be a "valued ally" .. you get the picture. For 3-4 yeas if you are lucky there is peace - the romans rebuild there army - and again they "wisit" you. Now it`s time to teach the romans a lesson: kill 1 of the roman factions ,burn all citys ... crush them ... at least enslave but killing works better. Now you should be a "pain in the ...." for every faction. They wisit you whit lots of offers ... be my friend .. let`s trade again ... and some will demand ... attack the demanders .. they will eventually fall or become your "friends". But there shoud be by now again a "disagreement" whitin the roman territory. Don`t choose sides ... if they come for an alliance offer them 5000-10000 as a gift. Nothing else. If you whis reaccept trade rights, but nothing more. By now most "barbarians have ... khmmm "decided" you are the king of kings .. or whathewer you like. Exactly the moment 1 roman faction emerges wictoryous send a gift of 100. For the romans this will be an insult - 9 of 10 times they become hostile the next turn.
After final victory you should remember the following .. a 100% barbarian or 100% civilised attitude thowards your opponents is a waste of time. A balanced mixe is a lot better as the AI does the same.
For example A hates B hates C but A and C who dislike each other will work togheter to crush B, then turn on each other. Every diplomatic action you make will give you points - sorry have no clue how much -, but my point is if you always exept a ceasfire, then the rest of the world will think you are a fool. If you always attack you`ll be the scourge of God ... - i like this one better - but, it`s preferable to remember that Mohammed had to come to the mountain not vice verca.
So after a filosophical nonsense and much ununderstandable ideas - are they that ? - remember this : I keep my friends close, but my enemys ... even closer

This is my most stupid post ever ... got to quit smokin` .. oh a lepricon ...
"One who knows the enemy and knows himself will not be in danger in a hundred battles.
One who does not know the enemy but knows himself will sometimes win, sometimes lose.
One who does not know the enemy and does not know himself will be in danger in every battle."
Dexter, that was a brilliantly illogical post, which had very little basis on the actual RTW engine.
And as a smoker myself, yes, id say you need to cut it down a bit :P

Erm... yes, you should indeed!
Edit: On second thought, there must be something numeric about diplomacy, or at least about the stance each nation has toward the other. In the bottom section of descr_strat.txt you have the starting relationships of certain nations toward other nations and these are expressed numerically.
On third thought, this is a quite useless information, as you never get to see these values anywhere in the game, either by numbers or in some kind of representation...

the starting relationships can be improved or vorsend a lot as how you approach your opponent .. if i understand it correctly the points are from 0 to 100 where 50 is neutral and 0 is mortal enemy ... big gifts tend to make things more worst ...as great wictorys may help for the moment but dont exept peace to last. Small gifts did help me keep my alliances, but newer to the bitter end. My longest if i remember correctly was for approx. 100 years whit the germans when i played as the julii ... eventually we had a "disagreement"
the only wisible info is found only in MTW2 - on the alliance panel where you can monitor your relation whit the other factions .. pls let me know if there is something similar in any other TW game ... - diplomatic screen does not always reflect things accurately ... a generous offer is not always exepted -
as for smokin i quit a long wile ago .. but the effects are not 100% gone ... maybe a braintransplantation may help me :P

Dexter- i honestly understood what u were saying and i dont think it was dumb at all.. it actually seemed kinda smart to try and hold peace for as long as possible but once you lose the peace dont waste anytime on destroying the faction thats what i got out of it anyway
