    Default "Seasonal" Gaming

Recently, I've been having a bit of a craving for RTS games again, like Starcraft and Age of Empires. Looking back, I noticed that it's been the same every summer - I've been playing Age of Empires, other RTS games, and MMORPGs, whereas every winter I've been playing more HOI2 and FPS games. I still play RTS games in winter, and FPS in summer, and so on, it's just that the overall trend changes.

Therefore, being the curious person I am, I started wondering how many people at the .Org did this, or if I was just insane. How many of you have before played various games or genres depending on the season, and have noticed before or just noticed now?

I attribute mine to ADD. I get hooked on one game, only to get bored with it and move on to another, and so on and so forth until I eventually come back to the first game.

I'm sure this is a phenomenon that isn't unique to you. I'm definitely the same way, though of course different choices per season --- hardcore strategy games in the fall, RPGs in the winter, RTS in the spring, and Zoo Tycoon in the summer Though of course right now I'm playing pack-the-house, a truly lovely and foot-numbing game!

I think I also play different genres different seasons, but exactly the opposite of your system: strategy in the autumn/winter, and FPS in the spring/summer.

I might actually attempt an RPG during the summer since summer breaks meant I actually had some time. That's about to end too

Hmmm, I can't say I've noticed a trend in my case. I do go back to playing old games periodically, but it doesn't really seem to depend on the season, or on summer/winter holidays; the cycles seem to be more or less random.

    I've played shooters recently. BF2142, CoD2, BF2.
In the winter, I do play RTS (probably because that is when TW series come out).

    Have you just been dumped?

I ask because it's usually something like that which causes outbursts like this, needless to say I dissagree completely.

I would say it's generally more RTS and HOI2 in the Winter and FPS during the summer.

I do play them all year round it's just i don't play FPS anywhere near as much during winter and vice versa.

I have gotten hooked on Diablo II and LOD for a year, got off, then relapsed twice in the following years.

I generally follow this pattern as well. This wasn't always so -- there was a time when I could (and did) play the same game for literally months at a stretch -- but I confess my attention span seems to have grown considerably shorter the last 3-5 years. Now I don't seem to spend more than a couple weeks playing the same game, although I'll come back to it that much sooner as well.

Jeez, me too. It kind of scares me. Like a druggie that needs more for a good buzz, a game doesn't provide me with nearly as much mileage as it used to.

I don't think the problem is with the games (at least not for me). I think my attention span has genuinely grown shorter in the last few years. It's like I'm actually developing ADD as I get *older*.....
