Thread: Internet explorer wont connect.
Mooks 07:49 07-05-2007
My brother went out travelling a few days ago, so iv been messing around with his labtop. The problem is though, is that nothing can connect to the internet. Its says it has a "excellent" connection at 540 mbs. But MSN, Firefox, Limewire, everything wont connect to it!

EDIT: Just in case your wondering, no I cant reach him. Hes travelling the country with his friend, and the chance of him answering his cell very low.

Blocked via firewall?

Router actually connected to network?

Can you ping websites?

Can you ping networked computers?

What is ping?

Iv checked the firewall, there appears only to be this thing called WinPatrol, I couldnt find anything else remotely like one but ill be sure to check again.

Everything looks fine with the router, my other computers work perfectly fine.

It's a DOS command that tests your connection with other computers (either on LAN or outside world).

I don't know anything about the Windows firewall (not having used it), but Winpatrol is a utility that lists all running and startup processes and apps. Unless you've got it to block Windows apps, it shouldn't affect things.

In the command prompt window, type 'ping www.google.com -t'
If there's no connection (ie if it says 'request timed out' or does nothing), then there's something wrong with your connection to the net.

If it works, ie is somehow blocked.

This is kinda obvious, but If you have a seperate router and modem, make sure that the modem is connected to the router first.
