In M2TW, infantry charging cavalry while cavalry charged at them would be mowed down, is this the same case in RTW?

Yes, infantry gets a bonus if they are braced for the charge. I'm not sure what the bonus is but keep infantry stationary if they're being charged.
Why did the chicken cross the road?
So that its subjects will view it with admiration, as a chicken which has the daring and courage to boldly cross the road,
but also with fear, for whom among them has the strength to contend with such a paragon of avian virtue? In such a manner is the princely
chicken's dominion maintained. ~Machiavelli
Unless of course you can flank them. Then move the infantry to flank whatever's coming at you.
If cavalry charge after infantry that are charging away after another unit it is ineffective. A few infantry get caught, few casualties, then both units fight. This has always bothered me how poor such a cavalry charge is.
Barbarians get a bonus if they warcry and attack. So brace or attack? Difficult one.
