    Lightbulb Strategic MP for MTW

    Dear all,

Last night I just had a crazy thought - as we now know most of the mechanics "behind the scenes" in the game - maybe some kind of MP could be facilitated.

My point is: the game is turn based, so everybody wouldn't have to be online at the same time.

So perhaps one person could be the "game master" and recieve all the players moves on email, and then reply what battles are to be fought, their composition, map, valor ect. Then, as the results are in, the game master ajust the results accordingly and updates the strategic map, which in turn are made public for the players. Maybe one could facilitate a couple of rounds per week?

But I think it could only be possible through some kind of database-setup and lots of other stuf that I havn't even thought of.

What do you think, is this totally impossible?

Isn't this what PBM is? I've never played PBM so I'm not 100% sure, but I think you may have re-invented the wheel

Yes, but usually in PBM the game will do the maths for you, here I'm talking about someone "hosting" the game. And you can't play MTW as PBM

Is there a way to edit save files? there are two problems that might be able to be overcome:

    - One, limitations in custom multiplayer battles. only use full, homogenous units. No way to represent depleted units, no way to represent variations in valour across the unit, no way to simulate a higher-command general (you can simulate the starting valour, but not the valor loss if he dies), etc.

    - Two, returning the result to the map. Once you fight the battle and know the results, how do you copy this back into the strategy map?

My most sincere appologies for questioning your point, but wasn't there a M:TW XL Genoa PBeM recently? My memories lead to believe that it may have been summarised in the first or second edition of the forum's newspaper - the Gahzette. I'm not too sure, but I think that I may have proof read the intriguing article. I'm sorry about my uncertainty, and please accept my humble appologies if I may be incorrect.

If you were to work out the save game's structure, then it may be, or may not, be possible to modify it using certain coding programs. Sadly, although this may be possible to do, working out the framework of the saves could take an incredibly long time. Fortunately though, as far as I understand the concept which the game is based around, I don't think that doing this is required.

In the way that History Geek is describing this game, I think that they will be based upon a database map or even a simple drawn image. Both of these would, in the way I understand it, imitate the M:TW map in showing army composition, moves and provinces. If this is the case, then the players won't even need the game to participate. The moderator could just use guesswork as to decide who wins the battles, what gains the valour and other such things which the computer would normally calculate in a M:TW game.

I'm sorry if this is incorrect or if I have poorly explained it. I hope this helps you, cheers!

BTW, History Geek, may I ask if this is the sort of game which you are describing?

Well, that would take care of any strategy map issues.
So I guess custom battles (with partial units) are already known how to do?
I think the desire is to allow people to fight all the battles MP, while still having a strategy map.
