    Default Quatorze Juillet

    C'est le 14 juillet!

...and nobody opened a thread yet?

Well, I guess it's up to one of those "petits belges" then...

Come on Orgah's! Chantez la Marseillaise!

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    REFRAIN

    Aux armes, citoyens !
    Formez vos bataillons !
    Marchons, marchons !
    Qu'un sang impur...
    Abreuve nos sillons !

    COUPLETS

    I

Allons ! Enfants de la Patrie !
Le jour de gloire est arrivé !
    Contre nous de la tyrannie,
L'étendard sanglant est levé ! (Bis)
    Entendez-vous dans les campagnes
    Mugir ces féroces soldats ?
Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras
    Égorger vos fils, vos compagnes.
    Aux armes, citoyens ! Etc.

    II

    Que veut cette horde d'esclaves,
De traîtres, de rois conjurés ?
    Pour qui ces ignobles entraves,
Ces fers dès longtemps préparés ? (Bis)
Français ! Pour nous, ah ! Quel outrage !
    Quels transports il doit exciter ;
    C'est nous qu'on ose méditer
    De rendre à l'antique esclavage !
    Aux armes, citoyens ! Etc.

    III

    Quoi ! Des cohortes étrangères
Feraient la loi dans nos foyers !
    Quoi ! Des phalanges mercenaires
Terrasseraient nos fiers guerriers ! (Bis)
Dieu ! Nos mains seraient enchaînées !
Nos fronts sous le joug se ploieraient !
    De vils despotes deviendraient
Les maîtres de nos destinées !
    Aux armes, citoyens ! Etc.

    IV

    Tremblez, tyrans et vous, perfides,
L'opprobre de tous les partis !
    Tremblez ! Vos projets parricides
Vont enfin recevoir leur prix. (Bis)
Tout est soldat pour vous combattre.
    S'ils tombent, nos jeunes héros,
La terre en produit de nouveaux
Contre vous tout prêt à se battre.
    Aux armes, citoyens ! Etc.

    V

    Français, en guerriers magnanimes
Portons ou retenons nos coups !
    Épargnons ces tristes victimes,
    A regret, s'armant contre nous ! (Bis)
    Mais ce despote sanguinaire !
Mais ces complices de Bouillé !
Tous ces tigres qui, sans pitié,
Déchirent le sein de leur mère !
    Aux armes, citoyens ! Etc.

    VI

    Amour sacré de la Patrie
Conduis, soutiens nos bras vengeurs !
    Liberté ! Liberté chérie,
Combats avec tes défenseurs ! (Bis)
Sous nos drapeaux que la Victoire
Accoure à tes mâles accents !
    Que tes ennemis expirants
Voient ton triomphe et notre gloire !
    Aux armes, citoyens ! Etc.

    VII

    Peuple français, connais ta gloire ;
    Couronné par l'Égalité,
    Quel triomphe, quelle victoire,
D'avoir conquis la Liberté ! (Bis)
Le Dieu qui lance le tonnerre
    Et qui commande aux éléments,
    Pour exterminer les tyrans,
Se sert de ton bras sur la terre.
    Aux armes, citoyens ! Etc.

    VIII

    Nous avons de la tyrannie
    Repoussé les derniers efforts ;
    De nos climats, elle est bannie ;
Chez les Français les rois sont morts. (Bis)
Vive à jamais la République !
    Anathème à la royauté !
    Que ce refrain, partout porté,
    Brave des rois la politique.
    Aux armes, citoyens ! Etc.

    IX

    La France que l'Europe admire
    A reconquis la Liberté
    Et chaque citoyen respire
Sous les lois de l'Égalité ; (Bis)
    Un jour son image chérie
    S'étendra sur tout l'univers.
    Peuples, vous briserez vos fers
Et vous aurez une Patrie !
    Aux armes, citoyens ! Etc.

    X

Foulant aux pieds les droits de l'Homme,
    Les soldatesques légions
    Des premiers habitants de Rome
    Asservirent les nations. (Bis)
Un projet plus grand et plus sage
    Nous engage dans les combats
Et le Français n'arme son bras
    Que pour détruire l'esclavage.
    Aux armes, citoyens ! Etc.

    XI

    Oui ! Déjà d'insolents despotes
    Et la bande des émigrés
    Faisant la guerre aux Sans-Culottes
Par nos armes sont altérés ; (Bis)
    Vainement leur espoir se fonde
    Sur le fanatisme irrité,
    Le signe de la Liberté
Fera bientôt le tour du monde.
    Aux armes, citoyens ! Etc.

    XII

O vous ! Que la gloire environne,
    Citoyens, illustres guerriers,
Craignez, dans les champs de Bellone,
Craignez de flétrir vos lauriers ! (Bis)
    Aux noirs soupçons inaccessibles
    Envers vos chefs, vos généraux,
    Ne quittez jamais vos drapeaux,
    Et vous resterez invincibles.
    Aux armes, citoyens ! Etc.

    VIVE LA FRANCE !

    VIVE LA LIBERTÉ !

Andres is our Lord and Master and could strike us down with thunderbolts or beer cans at any time. ~Askthepizzaguy

Felicitations. I must say that when I quickly skim through the lyrics of the song it instantly reminds me of... blind nationalism, patriotism, arrogance, exaggerated pride, and so forth, heh heh. It is with many of those songs, but with France's, heh heh...

It's true that the lyrics are somewhat outdated, considering they were written during a time of interior and exterior strife...

There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford

My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.

I wonder why: it's a revolutionary song, not a soundtrack for the teletubbies.
The "sang impur" (corrupt blood) is this of the french nobility that fled away and tried to come back in the luggage of foreign army. It's a song of struggle and hope. What would you put instead?

Something that could not be taken as a racial insult. I'm sorry, but "sang impur" can also be seen from that point of view.

This on the other hand I think is hilarious and does show a keen insight into the French psyche, customs and enduring tragedy.

Yes Stig, this year, it was a German who humiliated us. Which I guess is at least an improvement over the usual American humiliating us on this day.

    Clarification:

Gentlemen, I posted the lyrics of the Marseillaise in combination with a youtube link of a performance of France's national hymne.

Before posting, you are supposed to sing the Marseillaise.

Afterwards, you can post to wish France and all our french Orgah's a happy national holiday and discuss about all the good things France has to offer: french wine, le Tour de France, Edith Piaff, Brigitte Bardot (especially the young Brigitte Bardot ), Mireille Mathieu, other french women, Texans (apparantly ), Paris, french wine, la Provence, the pyrenees, Champagne, french wine, etc.

    Thank you

My apologies, Andres. I wish France and its citizens, and so forth, prosperity and good as I would wish upon anyone, but the post directed at me at least appears to reek of wrong assumptions, illogic, and something that has the appearance of a personal attack. This I hope you detect and justly understand.

But let us have a beer then. I'll have another right now

Despite all the ranting about the Rainbow Warrior...In honour of the day I will reveal that Pape is a closet Francophile due to his parents... well I think I was rebelling more against them.

My father has his "French Ladies" as we call them from Maine Anjou

and also a thousand trees with the seeds of black diamonds sprinkled about the base.

And somewhere along the line French heritage... oh the tragedy . I will sit back and think about it while I eat French Bree and drink Chianti (yeap the addled old ancestors aren't quite sure which side of the border that great... great... great grandparent came from)... I'm hopping hybridisation works as well for me as the cattle... come to think of it I think the French ancestor is from my Fathers, mothers side and the Italian ancestor from my Mothers, fathers side... meh... all good in the end when it comes to mixing genes and food.
