the thing I like the most is the blend of strategy and tactics.

say if I up on the battlemap and my king dies, that will effect the whole empire!

But it really depends on how much I smoked lately... The weeks when I smoke and play I find I get thrilled by the ability to RP situations...

Like when a new family members gets adult, and the same turn the pope asks for a crusade, and this new prince is in a town with a warmongering bishop... he then OF COURSE has to gather whatever troops he can get and set off to the holy lands...

Great stories takes shapes, and sometimes the game just shocks you...

as in my last game, where my king died and left a full stack of elite troops in the middle of mongol terriatory...

One captain then managed to beat 3 full stacks of troops, and then successfully lead the army all the way home, I had deemed them lost for sure! He got adopted as man of the hour, and later became the king!!!

Great stories are made as teh game progress, that's what I love about this game.

M2TW is so popular because it is the perfect mix of turn-based strategy (remember, chess is probably the oldest and best turn-based strategy war game that ever existed) and RTS fighting.

It gives you the best of both worlds!

I started playing Rome: Total War in the fall of 2005. I played it exclusively until M2TW came out in the late fall of 2006. I, too, play practically nothing else anymore.

I have played all the TW series. I have heard the same complaints about AI all through the years. It is the best strategy game ever! The AI gets better and better! (Please help me.... the AI has taken over and threatens to kill my king if I don't cooperate!) Seriously though, most strategy games consist of the AI attacking untill death.

actually, campaign AI was more of a challenge in MTW than MTW2... imho.

There some empire would rise to challenge you (usually the moors), in this edition you'r glad if the AI ever gets more than 10 provs.
