We aren't told if this is normal or unusual for one thing. 'Round these parts, its more common for the lass to be finished with the virginity thing before the schoolgirl status is lost (assuming that High School counts as school).

The "purity rings" are just a fad, the only thing linking them to the christian faith is that it is a christian fad.

You do realize that not everyone who calls him or herself a "Christian" takes the faith seriously, right? In some places, like the southeastern US for example, there are lots of people who apparently call themselves Christian just to be part of the "awesome goody group", or just hide the fact that they are homosexuals.

In what way is this discrimination?
The article states that English courts also rejected a similar case with a muslim head scarf and I do believe that a scarf for a muslim is a more widespread symbol than this purity ring.

Meh, the title is still misleading. I was expecting some good sleaze instead of a lame story about goody two-shoes and the bad judge. I mean come on, this is the age when girls named Bambi get breast jobs for their sixteenth birthday.

They said allowances were made for Muslim and Sikh pupils only for items integral to their religious beliefs and that, for the same reason, crucifixes were also allowed. But it argued that the purity ring was not an integral part of the Christian faith.

At first I thought- 'fair enough' when I read this.

Then I thought- but who can decide for someone else which parts of their faith are 'intergral'

Then I thought- ah screw em (or not as the case may be ) religious iconography of any sort should have no place in the classroom.

Personally, I'm learning to heed my own advice. It's not for me to tell the British how to enforce dress codes at their public (private) schools. I will simply state that I am thankful that religious displays aren't banned in American schools unless they can be proven to be an integral part of one's religious practice.

This isn't anything to do with a ban on religious displays in schools. The school has a no jewellry policy, according to the article-and the court has ruled religious jewellery isn't exempt from this. Good decision, to my mind. Although they seem to have made it for the wrong reasons, judging by the stuff about other violations being involved as they form an 'integral part' of faiths.

Hell, we still have a totally anachronistic legally mandated session of led prayer a day. Although most schools ignore it.
