The two funny bits about that are that the woman who got it is quite old and will hardly need that and that no HDD is fast enough to save data at the rate this connection can download so I don't really know what it is good for except being a publicity stunt.

Did I ever mention that I got a fibre cable laid into the first access point in my new house?
I built a new house last year and one day our government owned telephone operator came and wanted to put down a telephone cable into the ditch I had opened for my power line. What kind of cable is it? I asked. It’s a hybrid; two cables in one. A standard copper and a fibre cable. Sure, go ahead.
Then I called their sales department and asked what they could deliver on this new fibre. Nothing yet they replied. It is a project that Canal digital is currently running. Canal digital is one of the many pay TV suppliers we have and was recently bought by our government owned telephone operator.
I had Canal digital broadband in our old apartment and have never been happier with a operator.


Ok... I will tell that story as well.

I ordered the mini deal when we first moved into our old apartment. It was a standard 150/150 K line. I never really needed anything more then as I downloaded stuff at work. Canal digital offered a free 1 year security package to all their customers and I could not say a thank you but no thanks. I started the download but got thrown off 3 times before it was finished. I sent an angry email with a content asking why they offered this feature only to the customers that was actually able to download the stuff.
They replied that they had temporarily upgraded my line so that I could download the security package. I was upgraded from a 150/150 to a 2000/1000 line. I downloaded the security package and was happy to notice that they didn't downgrade me as promised. The security program expired and I still had my 2Mb line.

A campaign came and I felt a little bad for not informing them of me paying for a 150k line but used a 2Mb line. I jumped on the campaign offer and got the max 4000/1000 line. I was in the process of building my house then.
This campaign price would last to about me moving into my house and then the price would jump back up to what this line really cost. The agreement said I was bound to it for two years. I moved into my house and wanted to transfer my subscription. They couldn’t deliver so they just released me from our agreement.
The thing is, I would take them back any day. They always delivered more than they promised (ISP’s seldom do this) and I had more often than less a 2500 line for the 2000 line I didn’t pay for and a 5000 line for the 4000 I paid for. I also had unlimited download and upload capacity.

As soon as they can deliver on my fibre I am back in business with them.

I don't think even SSDs are fast enough for that speed, I don't think they can store a full movie in 2 seconds, they're faster than current disks, but not that much. And even if they were, with current capacities, they'd be full in one or two minutes.

Concerning pay-per-use content, if they go overboard with that, it could bring about the end of the internet as stupid as that may sound. I'm certainly not willing(or able) to pay for my connection and several websites or whatever in addition to that. There is a point where things stop being worth the money.

I don't think faster speed will be an issue.

All it will mean is that convergence of TV and the internet. You could have every room running a different TV program live over the internet from any country in the world.

40 Gigs per second at max through put would fill a one tera byte drive in 25 seconds... so it would fill up a drive space in no time. However that is assuming you want to keep every item of information that you get. That paradigm of thinking is based on dial up speeds where it takes ages to down load something.

Why go to a store and buy a game when you can go on line and buy a license for it and download the DVD of 7 gigs in quarter of a second?

In fact with throughput at such a speed you could just keep a menu of license keys and install the games on the fly when you play them. Delete them off the harddrive when you feel like it, keep a save file on a key or on an online sharepoint. Heck instead of loading a game locally at the speeds offered you would buy harddrive capacity at another location... pay for use, login to your space from any other PC. Imagine MyGame... being a place that has all your favourite PC games on it that you can access from any PC... in this scenario things do a full circle, your PC becomes a access point much like a TV, but not only TV, games, internet, word processor, your PC becomes a smart workstation.
