    Default French Music

    Hello,

I have a problem and I hope someone can help.

I am going to stat a new job and I have to improve my French. Although I had several year of lessons at school, most of that tuff is gone!

I have never been very good in foreign languages (as some of you may already have noticed ). However, I remember that I learned more English from listening to Roch and Roll than by learning at school. Maybe this could be an approach here too.

So here is my request: What is good French music: good to hear and good to learn French?

I'm going to give you some Belgian names but they sing in French

    What's your taste in music?

    Jacques Brel: a chansonier (singer-songwriter) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brel

    Axelle red: singer-songwriter
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axelle_red

    Vive la Fête: electro pop
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vive_La_F%C3%AAte
This may not be your taste in music but the lyrics are easy to understand and its vocabulary iseasy enough.

I don't like accordions, so I was never much into French music.

Francoise Hardy has clear enunciation and her music is easy on the ears. Quite easy on the eyes too.

    Youtube

Looking at a few of those videos, there's the additional advantage that the camera concentrates on her face, meaning one can watch the lips. Were it not for the fact that she was an extremely popular singer, those videos would almost be object language teaching material.

Oh, that depends a good deal on the genre you like. Francophone music isn't limited to chanson. You can find anything, from rock, to hiphop, to rap in French. Lots of world music is in French too.
Also, the French of Piaf and Aznavour is very different from the French of Lunatic and La Brigade, modern suburbian rapmusic.

Assuming you just want to learn intermediate level proper French through French songs, maybe you can try here. Lots of lyrics and links. The links of Stig, Phil and Pannonian are great to. If you want more modern music, try the charts and check for music styles that suit your taste.

You sound like somebody who would appreciate Mylène Farmer, my godess.

Rap: La Rumeur, Abd el Malek.
French song: Miossec, Da Silva, Pauline Croze... and so many: I don't like french song!
Rock: Marcel et son Orchestre (un grand classique indémodable: FAIRE CHIER MA SOEUR)

Well, I like everything from good old Rock and Roll (Chuck Berry) to Beatles and modern Rock. Don't mind if there is some Funk in it.

Well you have to give an ear to Noir Desir, even if the lyrics are a bit too abstract to be useful to someone who learns french. It's good rock'n'roll, french way.

What is the best French rap? I like the sound of rap in French, and I need to get some music so that I can blast it in my car every now and then.

Move over Chuck, step aside Elvis, and make way for the greatest rock star of the twentieth century: Johnny Hallyday

    MC Solaar is quite big.
But his music is more a mix of several styles, not really rap maybe.

Axiom is more hardcore rap. But I don't think his language qualifies as french anymore.

La Rumeur, again! A bit conservative in terms of music but with high political consciousness (though a bit too "leftist" for Louis, maybe )

I almost forgot. Try listening to Arno http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arno_Hintjens

I think you're going to like it. I would recommend 'Les filles du bord de mer', a cover from Salvator Adamo.

Shy'm - For you my friend.
She's hot, and she sings really well. One of the few French hotties I would really like to have.

What about Fatal Bazooka at rap?
Ja mata, TosaInu. You will forever be remembered.

MC Solaar sounds a bit like Timbaland.

Axiom doesn't even sound like he's speaking French to me, and I don't speak a word of it!
