Default Drawn sally battle results in captured settlement

    hi all,

last night I was sieging naples with a general, 2 merc xbows and 2 merc spears when the garrison sallied

they had far superior numbers so I decided to run full pelt for the walls and get up there with my ladders, while my general ran around in front of them as a distraction

to cut a long story short I ended up in the main square as the battle timer ran down with 4 general's bodyguard vs 140 odd spear militia

the battle was declared a draw, which I assumed would mean the siege continued, but in fact I was handed the city

is this a bug or have I misunderstood how this is supposed to work?

nb. it was the first turn of the siege so they had plenty of time left to hold out

i think not. i do believe any drawn sally with defenders unable to cleared the attackers, not wonder what was the actual score/kill ratio, will results in attacker automatically gain the town.

in my case, it was my pathetic units of spears and peasants being handed over on a platter despite causing a reasonable amount of casualties to the much high-tier AI troops opposing them. that will teach me to sally with poor quality troops .

dang, I should have just waited them out at the gate instead of trying to take the square and losing all my troops

seems a bit harsh on the defenders

In fact, like in any battle (field or siege), the battle timer is working against the attacking party...

Thus in your case the AI sallying...

If in such battles you cannot clear the field of your opponent's unit (killing or routing), the victory goes to the defender...

What seems strange nonetheless is that the result was declared a draw... Maybe it was so just because of your heavy losses...

For the OP, were the defenders still rebel or had another faction taken the settlement?

My understanding is that all seiges that end in a draw Vs rebels, the player gets the settlement but Vs another faction the settlement remains with the sallying faction.

Most of the time the Ai sallys only if:
    1. its the last turn of the siege
    2. There garrison is much much stronger then yours..

I think what happened to u is that they sallied in the last turn of the siege since after the draw the siege continued they all died of starvation...

    Right on the mark Eng...

I should have thought about it... That must have been it...

sorry guys, but as I said in my first post at the bottom, it was the first turn of the siege and they had plenty of turns left to hold out

they sallied because they had about three times my force - understandable, I was waiting for a reinforcement stack to turn up before I assaulted

they were rebel, so if nebuchadnezzar is correct that could explain it

    can anyone verify that?

When the player sallies he doesn't have to drive the enemy from the field, as long as you're within the walls and have done some damage you can end the sally or wait for the timer to run out and the siege goes on. It's possible that the draw was awarded to you because of them being rebels, but it seems more likely it was because you were in the town square when time ran out. IIRC If you attempt to end a sally with the enemy inside your walls, you lose, and if you attempt to end one with your troops outside the walls you also lose.

Perhaps some testing is in order.

He is. Rebels always get shafted. If they sally and don't kill/rout you, they lose the city.

In a regular battle, if you only rout them and decide not to chase their troops, even if they have a 1000 troops left, their stack will still die after the battle.
Still maintain that crying on the pitch should warrant a 3 match ban
