Where does it say that?
Jo the Greek, if you want to learn about Macedonian history, you could wiki it, and you can check out the EB Bibliography. In it, you will find a number of books that were useful to the EB team.

The guy who was supposed to be working on it bailed on us a few months ago. That's my understanding of the situation at least.
Aha, I see now...
Stupid of me not to have seen it before...

I refered to this because i was thinking that you maybe had problems with the modern politics in balkans (Makedonia Problem). I didn`t want to accuse
or to show your work just by clean curiosity i post it . PEACE.
We have no problem with modern politics, though many others do. We study history, and to our mind that is not to be interfered with by national sentiment or the modern political situations.

If someone can recommend me good books to be found on pre-Philippian Makedonia, I will attempt to write one for the site. I abhor EB vacuums. :)
EB DEVOTEE SINCE 2004
Actually, the History has been written up until to Alexander's Grandfather. Feel free to take it from there. I will do the rest in August. However, if you can write something, by all means, do!

Okay! Time for some research... Starting with a re-reading of JFC Fuller's Alexander treatise.

Why does EB call Macedonia, Makedonia? always got that a bit confusing![]()
Because it is a transliteration of Greek letters. Kappa = K
Ah, so calling it Macedonia is okay right?![]()
It's always fun to recreate Alexander's empire in 272.....
EDIT- In Alexander, when he rides triumphant into Babylon, they cheer "Sikander" what does this mean? is that just his name translated into Persian (dunno if thats the actual name of the langauge) or a nickname they gave him? or somthing they made up for the movie? heh, well anyway.

Yeah, Macedonia is alright. That's the Latin/Romanized form with a C instead of a K. It would be pronounced the same in both languages.
Sikander is Alexander in Persian. Greeks did the same thing with Persian names. Heck, some you wouldn't even be able to recognize.
Interesting side note: apparently Alexander wasn't really welcomed in Babylon like it is usually depicted. I need to remember where I read that. I think it was written in a Babylonian astrological diary or something.
Basically Macedonia is a transliteration of original greek "Makedonia"Originally Posted by Spoofa

Iskander is how those people today call Alexandros. Sikander might very well be how Babylonians or Persians -Abou is right here, just checked...would call him. The persians nick for him was "the cursed one" so I doubt that this is his persian nick.

Ah, my bad. Sikander might be Aramaic rather than Persian. Unless it was a play on words like Epiphanes and Epimanes.
Think he was Iskander in Persian.
Alexandria btw is called Iskanderiya and Kandahar is derived from Iskandahar or something similarly written (Iskander's City). And Iskander is actually a popular boy's name in Pakistan.

İn Turkish:İskenderSikander is Alexander in Persian
Some stuff of the Persian language was adapted from the nomadic Turks so i think it is persian
Here's a question to all the experts out there:
Is there a relationship between Alexander the Great and Iskender kebab?
...kebab? o.O
EB DEVOTEE SINCE 2004
Yeah, kebab. According to Wikipedia, he looks like that - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Iskender_kebap.jpg...kebab? o.O
Actually, I can see a slight similarity between this kebab guy and this Alexander freak - http://www.ancient-bulgaria.com/imag..._the_great.jpg.
Well, our EB experts should give us the full answer.
