    Default Odd diplomacy

I had a strange negotiations just now. I offered a peace to the Hungarians, which they perceived as very demanding, and rejected it. I decided to make another offer (with the same diplomat, without exiting the diplomacy screen), and I noticed that their priorities changed from unknown to peace. I offered peace again. This time they considered my offer to be very generous, and happily excepted it

    How can this be possible?

This happens a lot actually. I suspect it's a bug, but consider it to reflect the diplomat being shocked when you first propose it, then contacting his master and being ecstatic the next time you offer.

    Or something. ;)

Maybe it ran a check on known info (as you said, unknown intentions first time around. After the first was rejected, it updated and showed you they wanted peace). I'm guessing theres a penalty for not knowing what the other factions priorities are, and because you made contact with them (with the diplomat) the diplomat got wind of what their priorities were during your first attempt (or maybe a visibility check was run and you got a lucky roll and your diplomat saw what he didn't when first entering negotiations. I know spies sometimes miss spotting enemies, but if you move them back and forth it runs the check again and with some luck, a 1 skill spy can spot that 8 skill one without walking on top of him).

Of course, everything i say if speculation of course, and nothing more

So, i'd say its a bug, like the never ending diplomacy one i've noticed (its in the spoiler, so you can avoid reading it to keep you honest)

Don't read the following if your tempted to use glitches/exploits:

(in other words, you could give a very generous deal and ask them just for military access, and they would decline, but leave diplomacy going instead of shutting it down, allowing you to boost negotiations from abysmal to perfect in 1 turn if performed properly. It does cost you the skill of your diplomat as a penalty for failing negotiations over and over though.)

Don´t follow you on this. How can I leave diplo.nego without closing the diplo.screen?

For some reason the AI updates its priorities after the first offer.

Thinking about it, I guess it is not unlogical that the peace talks fail after the first round of negotiations, historically speaking .

It happened again in the same campaign, this time with the Scots. I wonder how many opportunities for peace I've missed in the past, because I dropped out of negotiations seeing that my initial peace offer was "very demanding"

If nothing else it is interesting to know.

I don’t seem to be able to get them to agree on which way the sun comes up and they never seem to change their minds.

You can have the little beggars down to one or two provinces and all their cities under siege, having destroyed all production and the economy with your agents and still peace is a demanding proposition and becoming a vassal totally out of the question. I don’t know how the AI is coded but it is pretty lame if you ask me.

I have noticed this sporadically too.

These days if I want something from the AI I'll usually gift florins/map info or open offer a territory first, then when I get the 'pleased/appreciative' response, I will start to bargain for what I want.

Normally, when you hit a snag in negotiations, the AI will get fed up and end it. If you try to give a deal for the World Map, and try it a few times unsuccessfully, they will break off negotiations due to repeated failures (Let's not discuss this any further).

With what i put in the Spoiler, you can effectively bypass this despite the failed negotiation, and do it over and over till you have Perfect relations with said faction.

Sorry if i'm confusing in the way i explain things, i've never been good at explanations.
