Conquer all his lands, exterminate all his army and kill him. After that he'll keep on spawning near Rome, so kill him any time with an assassin planted in Rome.
Dunno if it helps.

You have to kill all Cardinals, and the Pope, and eliminate all Catholic factions to ensure no priest gets promoted. You must eliminate your own priests as well, if you are Catholic.Originally Posted by acemutha

Wrong. I conquered the entire map as the Turks. I had a special pope killing army near Rome to kill him. The pope kept respawning near Rome every turn after I killed him. You can not kill the pope for ever. He is a feature of the game. In the end I got bored and let him stay near Rome. Now he can enjoy the beauty of the holy Muslim city of Rome with its 5,000 mosques.Originally Posted by askthepizzaguy

Seems a little ridiculous that he keeps coming back. I think he should be limited to only 5 oor so respawns with diminishing troop quality, or maybe just variable quality. Really I wish it were more like MTW1 where you would "take the Pope hostage." in M2 this could last the lifetime of a puppet Pope that won't excommunicate you, but also won't call crusades.

Arrows, let flown each to each
Meet midway and slice
The void in aimless flight

Thus I return to the source.
I agree the respawn is a little silly. I would like to see a more universal impact for the fall of rome to a non christian. Suppose the Turks did take it, there should be some event that attempts to unite the remaining catholics into total war/crusade to rome.Originally Posted by Zasz1234
In essence the respawn does this, as it continues until he gets land, but the fall of Rome should be some trigger for catholics to cease and desist current operations and refocus on the holy city.
There are few things more annoying than some idiot who has never done anything trying to say definitively how something should be done.

Btw I was Moor and it was enough a super trained assassin to repeately killing the pope. I also think that if you leave him few turns alive he might get an army.
but it's not confirmed.
I as an Rus wacked him, and conquered most of the Christian lands except Portugal, and he's gone. Actualy he was helpfull with his respawning. HE helped me get rid of those anoying max piety Cardinals who ruined my conversion (not that they could stop conversion. When I move 10+ priests, that land soon becomes ortodox, but they rummaged trough my backcountr reconverting people).
So killing him would do it. But you need to continue to kill him for as long as a single priest exists.
Furtunately worse and worse popes will get chosen and they will be easier to kill.

I was trying to be a "good" Muslim, but ended up with an untrustworthy rep as I kept eliminating Christian factions who started wars with me. I made it all the way to Poland by the end of the game. Granted that's not a great accomplishment on this board but I wanted to slowly develop the economy etc..
