Default RTW, worth it or not?

Random question: I am gonna get M2TW sooner or later and I was wondering if it is worth it for me to get RTW in the mean time? (I might be asking in the wrong forum as this is one FOR RTW people , but I figured I'd try!) I have only played MTW/VI and was wondering if buying RTW would be worth it... If so, would I want to buy a pack (with the expansions) and how would that effect my ability to play mods with it? (Some of the combo packs of games don't work with mods...) Anyway, thanks for your input!

It is definately worth it. If only to play some of the great mods that are available for RTW 1.5 as well as 1.6 (Barbarian Invasion). Judging by your user name it seems to me you would probably enjoy The Fouth Age: Total War mod for RTW 1.6. It's a fantastic looking mod for fans of LOTR.

I've heard of a number of people who have turned back to playing RTW after installing M2TW. I am one of them. I found M2TW somehow more superficial and lacking depth. It did not engage me.

Perhaps with skilled modding (and a few patches down the road) M2TW can trump RTW/BI, but for now I do not believe it does.

Totally worth it! You shouldn't even need to ask! Especially since it's only 20 bucks, now. At least at my local best buy.

Being totally honest with you RTW is worth it however but be like me (also a MTW and STW Vet) you might get bored and revert. I will say this however its only worth playing if you can commit plenty of time to it as it is much more in depth and your likely to take ages with strategies. This is why i got bored with RTW but now i can commit more free time I enjoy the depth of play although I would love to shoot the guy who had the bright idea of squalor(its suck a**) but all in all you should like it

I'd say it's definitely worth it. While the M2TW campaign map is improved, the battles are nowhere the level of RTW's. Cavalry works properly, the infantry are great, etc.

And this may be just me, but the campaign itself is more engaging. In my one campaign on RTW, I'm at 137 BC (266 turns - more than the full M2 amount) and still going strong. In Medieval I've only made it past the Black Death once and haven't even seen the Timurids or America.

    Hey Gimli!
How do you like RTW so far? It is a sweet game and I find having owned all the TW games, this one is a great addidtion to my gaming library. Definitely get your hands on BI if you can. It adds a whole new dimension to the RTW game and is a nice change from the Vanilla RTW and from M2TW. Now we must wait for Shogun2TW to emerge....Then life as we know it will be even more grand.......

In my opinion RTW is better, I first played MTW2 at my friends and to be honest with you it is a good game but I don't think the battles are as good and I'm not really into the Medieval Middle Ages period,Classical Antiquity does it for me.
Also the whole castle or town thing I don't like either, but on a plus side being able to launch a crusade or jihad's really cool.

P.S Is that how you spell it? Classical Antiquity?

Not owning RTW would be missing the sweetest point in the TW series I think. It is a great game. For me, the finest of the TW series so far.

Now, take up your pila/spear/bow/deadhead/falx/sword/axe and go get 'em!

Wow...just wow, I just ordered the game and haven't even received it yet and I already am dying to try that mod. Is it possible to have 2 seperate games going at the same time?

FATW is designed to be 100% contained in its own modfolder. Assuming that you install it first, using a clean installation of RTW/BI 1.6, you can then install any other BI mod and play both. Same goes for every mod that is mod-foldered and does not alter the base files, you can ideally have 100 of them. Of course you can always have 1 mod for BI and 1 for RTW, modfoldered or not.

Get EB. M2:TW will be a distant afterthought.

M2:TW is great, but I have to say that Rome: Total War is at they very least its equal. Even without mods. It's a better time period, doesn't have the pope, has more variety in units (in my opinion, at least) and has lower system requirements to have huge units and still have graphic settings high.

The way things stand right now, RTW/BI are the best game in the series in terms of gameplay, depth, bugs, balance, etc.
I bought M2TW first, then got my hands on RTW/BI and I have to say that RTW is a better game.

    Hi rvg,
I'm sorry to disagree, yet S:TW is currently has the least bugs in the series at current. This game is closely followed by M:TW. R:TW is the better of the next generation Total War games, but it, most unfortunately, still isn't fully fixed and probably won't be in the future - no official support is currently provided for R:TW.
