I was wondering - does anyone know any of Alexander the Great's military defeats? A quick Google search yielded nothing but praise for his career, and I have no books on hand.

Military, he is undefeated. A number of forces that weren't under his direct command got destroyed during the various uprisings against his rule, but whenever Alex himself was present his army was victorious. Similarly, several of his storming attempts failed, but he always captured the city eventually.

I guess those little mistakes that subordinates make are inescapable, even for such a brilliant commander as Alexander the Great. Thanks for the info.

As Ludens said, he died militarily undefeated, however strategically he wasn't the greatest. He marched across the Desert and lost a lot of men there. I belive I have some figures somewhere, but not on me.

alexander was defeated at the persian gates. he led in person, not his subordinates. because history is written by the winners, that defeat is always written about as a 'temporary setback' or as a minor skirmish but the fact is he went up against an entrenched position without bothering to recon, was beaten, withdrew for a month and outflanked the position.Originally Posted by OliverWKim

indeed
Using the same reasoning he lost Gaugamela because a squadron of Persian cavalry inflitrated his line and proceeded to attack the advanced camp. In the Persian gates he lost (a draw technically) was the first skirmish.
Also, he made the ascent (towards the rear of the gates) the same evening, not a month after.
