alexander was defeated at the persian gates. he led in person, not his subordinates. because history is written by the winners, that defeat is always written about as a 'temporary setback' or as a minor skirmish but the fact is he went up against an entrenched position without bothering to recon, was beaten, withdrew for a month and outflanked the position.
