ambushes, useful or a waste of time and resources?

Thanks to ambushes in my Aedui campaign two Lusotannan, three Sweboz, one Arvernii and two Roman armies got completely wasted. With about 20 000 enemies slaughtered in ambushes alone, I'd say useful.
