While it may come in handy, especially if you don't like forced "diplomacy" - it certainly is not cool.
1) It is too old to be cool; and it is NOT retro.
2) Those allies don't give back ALL of it. Oh, no. They keep a very substantial amount of it - and they only give it back if they are liquid enough to.

i have never ever ever managed to get a protectarate, even with single province states.

currently i have a massive hay empire and i find my income has stuck around 30k for years if anything with further conquests it now declines.

i am bordering the KH at the moment (having just destroyed the maks) will the greek state really give me much extra money?

Much? Well, if you play KH and you control the Aigean you have enough Economy to support a three front war!

A ceasefire is quite something different from a protectorate. Both require a douceur or a careful management of your wars. Very careful, very controlled, and very accute. You've got to have the upper edge but you also have got to take care not to offend the AI too much and to time your diplomacy exactly right.

having protectorates suck... because they wont do anything afterwards... nothing they just sit and do nothing... maybe they are supposed to... but i dont like it... i cant order them to go kill for me... so it sux.

and btw you do get everything back, and the bribe needs to be very big yes, usually even millions. so it does work, and its indeed an old trick.

but what truly sux is this: in some patch thougth it was 1.2 you got all the money the protectorates made, now thats something. i made 1.5 billion that way, having 3 protectorates.

Although I strongly agree with you that there are some provinces which you really don't want to conquer, I have to tell you that no settlement actually drains your treasury. Every settlement adds to your treasury, as long as you don't count the buildings' costs you build there as a drain.

If you're spending thousands of mnai every turn in troop retraining and reinforcments for some dinky land-locked town in the mddle of the desert, I would say that settlement would be a drain on your empire.

They are slightly less likely to betray you then an ally.

exactly in my case it is provinces in the heart of germany, whilst my capital is in armenia.
i have been taking a few provinces off the sweboz as part of a "punishment" campaign against the sweboz. (the impudent barbarians joined up with the getai and attacked my black seas ports).
i require a full stack in one of the provinces to defend it and mainitain order.

ideally i could give some german provinces to a docile client state.

I've been quite successful in using protectorates in my Seleukid campaign. Granted, I did use the force diplomacy mod to make the factions submit after I'd fought them to the brink of destruction. At first I had much trouble with my vassals conspiring with other factions, allying with them then starting a war and backstabbing me. But I learned how to counter that by keeping careful eye on their alliances and striking first against those factions.

So if you have a protectorate that has a nearby ally, you should start a war against them because if you don't strike first they'll build up an invasion force and attack you - and when that happens your protectorate will backstab you.
